Performance

9.1/10

The 2.5L 4-cylinder makes 178 hp, up from 169 hp, helping acceleration. Sadly the new electric power steering numbs road feel. Handling is secure but uninspiring due to weight and suspension tuning favoring comfort over agility. The available 3.5L V6 puts out 268 hp for stronger acceleration. The 6-speed auto shifts smoothly and improves fuel efficiency. Overall the performance befits a family sedan, not a sporty car.

Pricing & Running Costs

8.8/10

Base Camry L models start around $23,000. With the 4-cylinder engine and some option packages added, expect to pay $25,000-27,000, very competitive for the class. Estimated fuel economy of 28 mpg combined for 4-cyl and 25 mpg for the V6 are among the segment's best. Insurance, maintenance, and repairs should be affordable as with most Toyotas. High resale value provides peace of mind.

Design & Technology

8.5/10

The 2012 redesign brought more angular front and rear ends with a coupe-like roofline. The sporty SE trim gets its own unique bumpers. Cabin quality is improved with soft-touch materials and chrome accents, although some rivals do interiors better. A new Entune system offers smartphone connectivity but lags competitors’ systems. Overall the Camry plays it safe, which buyers expect in this segment.

Comfort & Practicality

8.2/10

Supportive front seats with height adjustment provide excellent long-distance comfort. The Camry offers substantial rear seat space for children or adults. Trunk space is generous at 15.4 cu.ft., though a bit less than before. Cabin storage spaces abound for personal items. Controls are straightforward and sightlines are excellent for easy driving maneuvers. Really a model of everyday ease of use.

Safety & Reliability

9.4/10

Though 2012 crash testing is unavailable, past Camrys received top safety scores which should carry over. 10 airbags and the usual stability/traction controls are standard. Optional blind spot monitoring enhances safety. Reliability is almost unmatched with average repair frequency and low ownership costs. As always resale values will be strong. With Toyota's reputation, peace of mind is included.
