Your Buick VIN, decoded

What you just saw, and what's still hidden

NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Buick is. It does not tell you what it has been through. Used-Buick buyers should specifically verify the September 2025 GM fuel pump power control module recall (shared with Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac; covers Encore GX, Envision, Enclave), the 60,100-vehicle 2024 Encore GX/Envista (and Chevrolet Trax) Virtual Cockpit Unit instrument panel software recall, the 2024 Encore GX/Envista airbag inflator recall, and the April 2026 GM-wide electronic owner's manual radio reset recall.

Active recalls across the Buick lineup

Across the Buick lineup, NHTSA recall data aggregated by Zilocar shows the Enclave, Envision, Encore GX, and Envista lead in active 2024–2026 campaigns. Because Buick shares platforms and components with Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac, most Buick recalls are part of broader GM cross-brand actions. The September 2025 fuel pump power control module recall and the April 2026 GM-wide electronic owner's manual radio reset recall both affect Buick alongside multiple sister brands.

What the free decode does not show

A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:

  • Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
  • Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
  • Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
  • Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
  • Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
  • Lien and finance records
  • Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points

NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025. Buick passenger vehicles are not among the most-stolen models nationally, but used-Buick buyers still benefit from theft-history checks because cloned or rebuilt-title resales can happen anywhere. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Buick VIN

A Buick VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. 1G4 marks a US-built Buick passenger car or SUV (Enclave, Envision historical, LaCrosse historical, Regal historical, Lucerne historical). KL4 marks a Korea-built Buick from GM Korea (Encore GX, Envista, older Encore — these share platform with Chevrolet Trax/Trailblazer). Some Envision generations have been imported from China-based GM Dongyue, which carries its own WMI prefix. Plant codes in position 11 reflect assembly plants such as Lansing Delta Township, Michigan (Enclave), and Bupyeong/Changwon, South Korea (Encore GX, Envista). Position 10 is the model year code (P=2023, R=2024, S=2025). For VIN-specific recall completion status direct from GM, the Buick Owner Center Recalls page is the manufacturer source.

The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents. The myBuick mobile app and Buick Infotainment System also display it.

Recent Buick recall campaigns to verify

GM fuel pump power control module (September 11, 2025): Covers Buick Encore GX, Envision, and Enclave plus many GMC, Chevrolet, and Cadillac vehicles. A defective fuel pump power control module may fail and interrupt fuel flow to the engine, creating a potential traffic safety hazard. Dealers replace the fuel pump power control module pending inspection. Recall notifications began September 11, 2025.

60,100-vehicle 2024 Encore GX/Envista/Trax VCU blank instrument panel (early 2024): Covers 2024 Buick Encore GX, Buick Envista, and Chevrolet Trax vehicles where software in the Virtual Cockpit Unit Module may cause the instrument panel to go blank. Approximately 60,100 vehicles total across the three nameplates. Dealers update the VCU software at no cost.

2024 Encore GX/Envista airbag inflators (recall, multiple owner letters): Covers 2024 Buick Encore GX and Envista vehicles plus shared platform GM models for airbag inflator concerns. Dealers inspect and replace as necessary.

2024 Buick Enclave driver airbag inflator (February 2024): Covers 2024 Buick Enclave vehicles for a driver-side airbag inflator concern.

Electronic owner's manual radio reset (April 16, 2026, GM N252540430): GM-wide recall covering many 2025–2027 GMC, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Buick vehicles — for Buick specifically the 2026 Enclave and 2026 Envision — where the radio may not have been set to the correct status to download the electronic owner's manual (FMVSS 208 noncompliance). Dealers reset the vehicle radio free of charge. Owner letters mailed April 13, 2026.

2021–2022 Buick Enclave roof rail airbag harness connector (April 29, 2022): Covers 2020–2022 Chevrolet Traverse and 2021–2022 Buick Enclave vehicles where the harness connector to the left or right side roof rail airbag may have incompatible electrical terminals, which could prevent airbag deployment.

Common Buick issues used-car buyers should verify

2020 multi-model fuel pump jet nozzle: Covers 2020 Buick Enclave plus Cadillac XT5/XT6, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia vehicles where the fuel pump's jet nozzle may have a plastic burr remaining from manufacturing, possibly blocking the nozzle and causing insufficient fuel supply.

2021–2023 Envision daytime running lights (DRLs): Covers 2021–2023 Buick Envision plus various Cadillac and Chevrolet vehicles where the DRLs may not deactivate when headlights are on (FMVSS 108 noncompliance).

Older Verano side/window airbag recall (July 2024): Covers older Buick Verano vehicles for side/window airbag concerns.

Older Takata airbag remedy: Buick vehicles built 2003–2017 may be part of the broader Takata airbag campaign per NHTSA's Takata Recall Spotlight. Older Lucerne, LaCrosse, Enclave, Regal, and Verano models should be checked closely for Takata remedy completion.

Brand consolidation context (used buyer note): Buick's US lineup has consolidated significantly over the past decade, with sedan models discontinued and the brand focusing on SUVs (Enclave, Envision, Encore GX, Envista). Parts availability and dealer network for older Buick sedans like LaCrosse, Regal, Verano, and Lucerne remains strong through the GM network but may slowly reduce over time.
