Your Ram VIN, decoded

What you just saw, and what's still hidden

NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Ram is. It does not tell you what it has been through. Used-Ram buyers should specifically verify the 72,338-vehicle 12-inch IPC blank display recall (FCA codes B4C and B8C, owner letters December 18, 2025), the separate 65,348-vehicle 3.5-inch IPC recall (code 35D, May 2026 letters), the 52,565-vehicle occupant restraint controller module recall, the 2019 Ram side curtain airbag inflator recall (codes C2C/C7C/C8C), and the 2021–2022 Ram steering column control module driver airbag recall (code 14C).

Active recalls across the Ram lineup

Across the Ram lineup, NHTSA recall data aggregated by Zilocar shows the 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, 5500, and ProMaster lead in active 2025–2026 campaigns. Two separate IPC display recalls account for 137,686 vehicles combined: codes B4C and B8C (72,338 trucks with 12-inch Marelli-supplied IPCs, December 2025) and code 35D (65,348 trucks with 3.5-inch IPCs, May 2026). The 52,565-vehicle occupant restraint controller module recall (December 2025) is particularly serious — a single fault simultaneously affects the airbag, seat belt pretensioner, and electronic stability control system.

What the free decode does not show

A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:

  • Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
  • Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
  • Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
  • Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
  • Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
  • Lien and finance records
  • Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points

NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025, and the Ram 1500 ranks among the most-stolen pickup trucks in the US, particularly for parts and export. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Ram VIN

A Ram VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. 1C6 marks a US-built Ram truck (current generation Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 from Stellantis assembly plants). 3C6 marks a Mexico-built Ram from the Saltillo, Mexico plant (Ram 1500 production for North America). 1D7 and 3D7 mark older Ram or Dodge-branded Ram trucks (the Ram name became a standalone brand in 2009, before which Ram pickups were branded as Dodge). Plant codes in position 11 include Saltillo, Mexico (Ram 1500), Warren Truck Assembly Michigan (Ram 1500 Classic), and Sterling Heights Assembly Michigan (newer Ram 1500 DT generation). Position 10 is the model year: P=2023, R=2024, S=2025. For VIN-specific recall completion status direct from Stellantis, the Ram Owner Center is the manufacturer source.

The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents. The Mopar Owner's Companion app and Uconnect infotainment system also display it.

Recent Ram recall campaigns to verify

FCA codes B4C and B8C, 12-inch IPC blank display (December 2025, 72,338 vehicles): Covers 2025–2026 Ram 1500 Pickup, Ram 2500 Pickup, Ram 3500 Pickup, Ram 3500 Cab Chassis, Ram 4500 Cab Chassis, and Ram 5500 Cab Chassis equipped with 12-inch instrument panel clusters supplied by Marelli North America. Software defect can cause IPC display to fail. Approximately 1% of recalled vehicles have the defect. Affected trucks were produced between October 3, 2023 and November 12, 2025. Dealers inspect and update IPC software or replace the IPC cluster as necessary at no cost. Owner letters mailed December 18, 2025.

FCA code 35D, 3.5-inch IPC blank display (May 2026, 65,348 vehicles): Covers 2025–2026 Ram 1500/2500/3500 and 3500/4500/5500 Cab Chassis trucks equipped with 3.5-inch instrument panel clusters from Marelli. A software defect can cause the instrument panel to become completely inoperative, failing multiple FMVSS standards for braking, lighting, and occupant safety. Dealers update the instrument panel software free of charge. Owner letters expected May 28, 2026.

Occupant restraint controller module (December 2025, 52,565 vehicles): Covers 2025 Ram 2500/3500 Pickup, Ram 3500 Cab Chassis, Ram 4500 Cab Chassis, and Ram 5500 Cab Chassis produced July 18, 2024 through May 22, 2025. A single software fault may cause the occupant restraint controller module to go offline while driving, simultaneously affecting the driver's airbag, seat belt pretensioner, and electronic stability control system.

FCA codes C2C, C7C, and C8C, side curtain airbag inflator (December 18, 2025): Covers 2019 Ram 1500 Classic, Ram 3500, and 2019–2020 Ram 2500 vehicles where the right and left side curtain airbag inflators may rupture due to a manufacturing defect, sending sharp metal fragments toward occupants.

About RAM

Ram is the truck and commercial vehicle brand under Stellantis, previously spun off from the Dodge truck lineup in 2010. Ram primarily sells full-size 1500, heavy-duty 2500/3500 pickups, and ProMaster vans. Known for luxurious interiors and ride quality, Ram 1500 crew cabs cater towards personal use buyers, while regular and extended cabs retain rugged utility. The 1500 model stands out in the pickup segment with smooth highway manners, ample cabin tech and available hybrid powertrain. Towing and payload capacities still meet demands from fleet operators and contractors. The RamBox cargo management system and multifunction tailgate boost everyday practicality. Meanwhile 2500 and 3500 models push extremes, rated to tow over 30,000 pounds properly equipped. Looking ahead, the Ram 1500 enters a new generation for 2025 with revised styling and twin-turbo I6 engines replacing the V8. The 2025 lineup also expands with two electric trucks: the battery-powered 1500 REV and PHEV Ramcharger. These will compete with upcoming offerings from rivals. On the commercial side, Ram should launch the ProMaster EV cargo van for added efficiency. So while Ram trucks retain rugged capability expected from the segment, focus has turned to balancing utility with upscale refinement and advanced technology. The brand keeps customer experience central, evident through details like the excellent Uconnect infotainment. As priorities and expectations evolve in the pickup market, Ram pushes ahead as both a workhorse brand and near-luxury nameplate for retail buyers. Ram thus covers both professional and personal ends of the truck spectrum.
