Your Jeep VIN, decoded

What you just saw, and what's still hidden

NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Jeep is. It does not tell you what it has been through. Used-Jeep buyers should specifically verify the 320,065 Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEV battery fire recall (supersedes 24V-720, includes park-outside advisory), the 113,000-vehicle "engine sand" contamination recall on 4xe models (do-not-drive advisory), the 63,000 Cherokee PTU recall (NHTSA 25V-011), and the older 1.2 million-vehicle Compass/Grand Cherokee software glitch.

Active recalls across the Jeep lineup

Across the Jeep lineup, NHTSA recall data aggregated by Zilocar shows the Wrangler 4xe, Grand Cherokee 4xe, Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, and Cherokee lead in active 2025–2026 campaigns. The 4xe PHEV lineup carries a 320,065-vehicle battery fire recall (228,221 Wrangler 4xe + 91,844 Grand Cherokee 4xe) plus a separate 113,000-vehicle engine-sand contamination recall covering supplier-cast engine blocks from a Mexico facility produced June 7, 2023 through March 4, 2025. Stellantis has reported 36 fires, 50 loss-of-propulsion incidents, and over 140 warranty claims potentially tied to the engine-sand defect.

What the free decode does not show

A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:

  • Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
  • Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
  • Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
  • Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
  • Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
  • Lien and finance records
  • Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points

NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025, and the Jeep Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, and Cherokee rank among the more frequently stolen Jeep models in some metro areas, particularly for parts. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Jeep VIN

A Jeep VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. 1C4 marks a US-built civilian Jeep (Wrangler, Cherokee, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Renegade). 1J4 and 1J8 mark older US-built Jeeps (Liberty, Patriot, Grand Cherokee WJ/WK generations). 1C6 marks a US-built commercial or heavy-duty Jeep variant (Gladiator, heavy-duty Wrangler trim). Plant code in position 11 reveals the assembly plant: L=Toledo, Ohio Assembly (Wrangler, Gladiator), J=Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit (Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer historical), B=Belvidere Illinois (Cherokee historical, idled in 2023). Position 10 is the model year: P=2023, R=2024, S=2025. For VIN-specific recall completion status direct from Stellantis, the Jeep Safety Recalls page is the manufacturer source.

The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents. The Jeep app and Uconnect infotainment system also display it.

Recent Jeep recall campaigns to verify

Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEV battery fire (320,065 vehicles, supersedes 24V-720): Covers 2020–2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe (228,221 units) and 2022–2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe (91,844 units) plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The high-voltage battery pack may have cells with separator damage, which may lead to a vehicle fire. Stellantis advises owners to park outside, away from structures and other vehicles, and not to charge unrepaired vehicle batteries until remedied. Stellantis is aware of one potentially related injury.

4xe engine sand contamination recall (November 2025, 113,000 vehicles, do-not-drive advisory): Covers Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe vehicles with engines built between June 7, 2023 and March 4, 2025 at a Stellantis supplier facility in Mexico. Sand from the casting process can remain trapped inside the engine block, break loose over time, and circulate through internal components, causing overheating, internal damage, "unexpected and unrecoverable loss of propulsion," or engine-compartment fires. Stellantis reported 36 fires, 50 loss-of-propulsion incidents, and 140+ warranty claims potentially tied to the defect. Interim notification letters mailed December 29–31, 2025. A permanent remedy is still under development.

NHTSA Campaign 25V-011, Cherokee PTU loss of power (January 2025, 63,000+ vehicles): Covers Cherokee vehicles with a poorly seated input shaft ring. The power transfer unit (PTU) may become damaged and disengage the transmission and differential, resulting in loss of drive power and/or loss of park function.

FCA code 77C, Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer door trim (September 2025): Covers 2022–2025 Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer vehicles where the trim on the driver and passenger doors may not have been installed properly, creating a road hazard if it detaches.

FCA code 73C, Wrangler TPMS remote start antenna (September 2025): Covers 2024–2025 Jeep Wrangler vehicles where the remote start antenna cable may be pinched, causing the TPMS warning light not to illuminate as intended.

FCA code 20C, second-row head restraint (September 2025): Covers certain Jeep vehicles where dealers inspect and replace both second-row seat head restraints as necessary.

2024 Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer/Grand Cherokee rearview camera (January 21, 2025): Covers 2024 Jeep Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, Grand Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee L vehicles for incorrect rearview camera module software (FMVSS 111 noncompliance).

About JEEP

Jeep is an American automotive brand known for its rugged SUVs and off-road capability. It traces its roots back to WWII when the original Jeep was created as a lightweight military vehicle. Today, Jeep is owned by Stellantis and continues to focus exclusively on SUVs, with models ranging from the iconic Jeep Wrangler to the more refined Grand Cherokee. Central to the Jeep brand is off-road readiness. Even more comfort-oriented models like the Cherokee have available four-wheel drive and trail-rated trims optimized for adventures. The Wrangler and Gladiator pickup truly epitomize the ruggedness Jeep is known for, with solid axles and removable doors and roof. While capability remains a cornerstone, Jeep has evolved with the times. Interiors have become more refined and daily drivability is better suited to most buyers' needs. Advanced technology and safety features are available, especially on models like the three-row Grand Cherokee L. Electrification is also on the horizon. In essence, Jeep strives to hold onto the rugged DNA and off-road mastery it was founded on, while continuing to adapt and modernize for today's drivers. After 80 years, the brand retains a distinct adventurous, All-American identity rooted in the freedom of going anywhere you please. For those seeking SUVs with grit and character, Jeep remains a top contender.
