Your Fiat VIN, decoded
What you just saw, and what's still hidden
NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Fiat is. It does not tell you what it has been through. Used-Fiat buyers should specifically verify the August 2024 FCA code 82B seat belt buckle switch hall effect sensor recall (covering 2019–2023 Fiat 500X, 2024 Fiat 500E plus Alfa Romeo Giulia/Stelvio and Jeep Renegade), the December 2025 FCA code D4C wheel arch liner recall (same multi-brand population), and any Fiat 500 (2012–2019) historical campaigns.
| What NHTSA showed you | What the full Zilocar report adds |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer, plant, year, body class | Every reported accident with severity and damage area |
| Engine, drivetrain, fuel type | Odometer readings across the vehicle's life, with rollback flags |
| Open recall campaigns | Title brands (salvage, flood, rebuilt, lemon law buyback) |
| Vehicle type, GVWR | Ownership timeline and how many hands the car has passed through |
| Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers | |
| Lien and finance status | |
| Auction photos from past resale points |
Active recalls across the Fiat lineup
Across the Fiat lineup, NHTSA recall data aggregated by Zilocar shows the 500X, 500E, and historical 500 lead in active 2024–2026 campaigns. Because Fiat shares production and platforms with other Stellantis brands, most current Fiat recalls are cross-brand actions covering Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio plus Jeep Renegade alongside Fiat 500X and 500E. The August 2024 seat belt buckle switch recall (82B) and December 2025 wheel arch liner recall (D4C) both span all five Stellantis nameplates simultaneously.

What the free decode does not show
A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:
- Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
- Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
- Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
- Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
- Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
- Lien and finance records
- Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points
NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025. While Fiat vehicles do not rank among the most-stolen US models, the 500 and 500X have appeared in some metro area theft and recovery records, particularly in dense urban markets. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Fiat VIN
A Fiat VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. ZFA marks an Italy-built Fiat from Stellantis plants. The Fiat 500X is built at Stellantis Melfi, Italy. The Fiat 500e (returning to US in 2024) is built at Mirafiori, Turin. The Fiat 500 (2012–2019 US-market) was historically built at Toluca, Mexico (FCA Toluca Assembly Plant) alongside the Dodge Journey, with that production carrying a 3C3 WMI prefix in some cases, or shipped from Italy with ZFA. The Fiat 500L (2014–2020 US) was built at Kragujevac, Serbia, and carries a VR3 WMI prefix. Position 11 is the plant code; position 10 is the model year (P=2023, R=2024, S=2025). For VIN-specific recall completion status direct from Stellantis, the Fiat USA Customer Care page is the manufacturer source.
The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents. The Fiat Connect app and Uconnect infotainment system also display it.
Recent Fiat recall campaigns to verify

Owner letters mailed beginning August 27, 2024. NHTSA campaign 24V-510. Stop sale in effect.
FCA code D4C, wheel arch liner (December 2025): Covers 2019–2023 Fiat 500X, 2024 Fiat 500E plus 2017–2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia, 2018–2025 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, and 2019–2023 Jeep Renegade for wheel arch liner concerns potentially affecting the wiring harness. VINs searchable on NHTSA.gov from December 16, 2025.
Fiat 500 (2012–2019 US-market) historical recalls: The first-generation Fiat 500 sold in the US covers various historical recalls including dual-clutch transmission (Abarth and certain manual variants), fuel filler door, and rearview camera campaigns. Used 500 buyers should check NHTSA's recall database for any unaddressed campaigns specific to their year and trim.
Fiat 500X (2016–2023 US-market): Beyond the cross-brand 82B and D4C recalls, the 500X has had various model-specific recalls including transmission and electrical campaigns shared with the Jeep Renegade (both built on the same Small Wide 4×4 platform at Melfi).
Fiat 500e BEV (2024+): The reintroduced electric Fiat 500e for the US market is a fully electric urban car built at Mirafiori, Turin. Early production has been subject to various small-batch recalls typical for early production EVs.

Common Fiat issues used-car buyers should verify
Fiat 500 (2012–2019) MultiAir engine: The 1.4L MultiAir engine in the Fiat 500 and 500L has documented oil consumption and timing chain wear patterns. Verify any documented engine service history.
Fiat 500 Abarth turbocharger: The Abarth variant of the Fiat 500 with the 1.4L turbo MultiAir engine produces 160 horsepower and has higher service intensity. Verify documented turbo and intercooler service.
Fiat 500X Tigershark engine: The 500X (2016–2023) used the 2.4L Tigershark engine. Verify oil change history given the engine's reliability profile.
Fiat 500L Serbia production context: The Fiat 500L (2014–2020 US) was unique in being built at Kragujevac, Serbia. Parts availability for the 500L is more limited than for Italy-built 500 models.
Fiat 124 Spider (2017–2020) Mazda MX-5 partnership: The Fiat 124 Spider was a rebadged Mazda MX-5 (ND generation) built at Mazda's Hiroshima plant in Japan, with a Fiat 1.4L MultiAir engine. Used 124 Spider buyers should be aware of the Mazda mechanical heritage.
