Your Alfa Romeo VIN, decoded

What you just saw, and what's still hidden

NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Alfa Romeo is. It does not tell you what it has been through. Used-Alfa Romeo buyers should specifically verify the September 2025 Giulia/Stelvio low-pressure fuel pump recall (FCA code, 53,849 vehicles, 5 crashes 3 injuries reported pre-recall), the October 2025 Giulia/Stelvio rearview camera A2C recall (62,910 vehicles), the August 2024 cross-brand seat belt buckle switch hall effect sensor recall (FCA code 82B, covering Giulia, Stelvio, Fiat 500X, Jeep Renegade, Fiat 500E), and the December 2025 wheel arch liner D4C recall.

Active recalls across the Alfa Romeo lineup

Across the Alfa Romeo lineup, NHTSA recall data aggregated by Zilocar shows the Giulia, Stelvio, and Tonale lead in active 2024–2026 campaigns. Because Alfa Romeo shares production and platforms with other Stellantis brands, many Alfa Romeo recalls are cross-brand actions covering Fiat 500X, Fiat 500E, and Jeep Renegade alongside Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio. The September 2025 fuel pump recall (53,849 vehicles for 2017–2018 Giulia and 2018–2019 Stelvio) and October 2025 rearview camera recall (62,910 vehicles for 2020–2025 Giulia and Stelvio) account for the largest current Alfa Romeo recall populations.

What the free decode does not show

A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:

  • Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
  • Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
  • Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
  • Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
  • Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
  • Lien and finance records
  • Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points

NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025. While Alfa Romeo vehicles do not rank among the most-stolen US models, the Giulia Quadrifoglio and other high-performance variants are high-value targets in some metro areas. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Alfa Romeo VIN

An Alfa Romeo VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. ZAR marks an Italy-built Alfa Romeo from Stellantis plants, most commonly the Cassino plant in central Italy (Giulia GA, Stelvio GU) and the Pomigliano d'Arco plant (Tonale, plus shared Fiat platforms). The Tonale (2023–present US) is built at Pomigliano d'Arco alongside the Fiat Tipo. The Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio share the high-performance 2.9L twin-turbo V6 with the Maserati Levante and Quattroporte. Position 11 is the plant code; position 10 is the model year (P=2023, R=2024, S=2025). For VIN-specific recall completion status direct from Stellantis, the Alfa Romeo USA Customer Care page is the manufacturer source.

The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents. The Alfa Connect app and Uconnect infotainment system also display it.

Recent Alfa Romeo recall campaigns to verify

Interim notification letters mailed by October 30, 2025. Remedy under development.

Giulia/Stelvio rearview camera A2C (October 2025, 62,910 vehicles, FCA code A2C): Covers 2020–2025 Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio vehicles where the rearview camera image may not display when reverse is selected (FMVSS 111 noncompliance), showing a blank, black, blue, or inverted screen. Caused by a defective printed circuit board and software stability issues from the infotainment supplier. Dealers replace the infotainment systems with units running the latest software package, or update software as needed. Customer notification letters mailed November 25–26, 2025. VINs searchable on Mopar website from October 14, 2025.

FCA code 82B, seat belt buckle switch hall effect sensor (August 2024): Covers 2017–2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia, 2018–2025 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, 2019–2023 Fiat 500X, 2019–2023 Jeep Renegade, and 2024 Fiat 500E vehicles. FCA code D4C, wheel arch liner (December 2025): Covers 2017–2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia, 2018–2025 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, 2019–2023 Fiat 500X, Jeep Renegade, and 2024 Fiat 500E vehicles for wheel arch liner concerns potentially affecting the wiring harness. VINs searchable on NHTSA.gov from December 16, 2025.

Tonale (2023–present) campaigns: The Alfa Romeo Tonale, a newer compact crossover for the US market, has been subject to various recall campaigns from 2023 forward including rearview camera image display recall on certain 2023–2025 Tonale models.

Common Alfa Romeo issues used-car buyers should verify

Giulia/Stelvio TBI software: Used Giulia and Stelvio buyers should verify the Alfa Connected Services (TBI) software has been kept current through dealer service, as multiple recalls require updated software.

Giulia 2.0L turbo I4 carbon buildup: The standard Giulia/Stelvio 2.0L turbo I4 with direct injection has carbon buildup patterns common to direct-injection engines. Regular fuel system service is worth verifying.

Giulia Quadrifoglio / Stelvio Quadrifoglio 2.9L twin-turbo V6 (Ferrari-developed): The 505-horsepower 2.9L V6 in Quadrifoglio models was developed in cooperation with Ferrari engineering and shares architecture with the Ferrari V8 (minus two cylinders). Used Quadrifoglio buyers should verify any documented engine service history given the performance characteristics.

Tonale Q4 PHEV battery: The Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (Q4 PHEV) uses a 15.5 kWh battery for approximately 32 miles of all-electric range. Verify any documented battery service.

"Very thorough reports, which have helped me IMMENSELY in my used-car buying journey. Believe me, I dodged more than one bullet in buying severely-flawed vehicles that looked great from the outside, but these reports told a very different story." — Zilocar customer review
