Car price negotiation, with the market on your side.
Search new and used cars at dealers across the US and see how long each one has been for sale, how its price has moved, what similar cars cost, and a suggested opening offer. Walk in knowing how much room you have to negotiate.
Dealers know their market. These six steps put the same data on your side of the table, and Car Scout shows each one on every listing.
1
Start with how long the car has been listed
The longer a car sits on the lot, the more motivated the dealer usually is to sell it. Car Scout shows days on market on every listing, so you know whether you are looking at a fresh arrival or a car the dealer has been trying to move for months.
2
Check supply and how fast the model sells
Market days supply estimates how long it would take to sell every similar car for sale at the current pace. Under 45 days points to limited leverage, and 120 days or more to strong leverage. Sell-through shows how much of the recent market sold in the last 45 days. Below 30% means buyers are scarce and you have room to push.
3
Anchor on the market, not the sticker
Compare the asking price with the median of similar cars nearby and with the predicted market price. If the car is listed above market, that gap is your strongest argument, and it is backed by real listings rather than a hunch.
4
Open with a number you can defend
The suggested opening offer turns all of this into a range. Its low end runs from about 2% below asking when leverage is limited to about 10% when it is strong. It can stretch toward the local market price, but never more than 15% below asking, when the car is overpriced.
5
Negotiate the out-the-door price
A low monthly payment can hide a higher price, a longer term, or add-ons. Use the payment estimate to see the total with taxes and fees, and ask the dealer for an itemized out-the-door quote before you agree to anything.
6
Verify the car before you sign
A good price on the wrong car is not a deal. Run a ZILOCAR history report on the VIN to check for accidents, title problems, and mileage records before you commit.

Car Scout is a ZILOCAR tool for searching new and used cars for sale at dealers across the US. Every listing comes with market data that helps you judge the price before you contact the dealer.
Is Car Scout free?
Yes. Searching listings and reading listing insights is free with a ZILOCAR account. You only pay if you choose to buy a vehicle history report or use our car buying service.
Where do the listings come from?
Listings are collected from more than 80,000 US dealer websites every day. New listings and price changes are usually picked up the same day. Always confirm price and availability with the dealer before you visit.
How is the negotiation power score calculated?
It combines how long the car has been listed, how many similar cars are for sale, and how quickly that model has sold over the last 45 days. Cars that have sat longer in a well-supplied, slow-moving market usually leave more room to negotiate.
How is the value score calculated?
It compares the asking price with the original MSRP, the car’s age, and its mileage. A car that has already absorbed most of its early depreciation, with average or low mileage for its age, scores higher.
How much can you negotiate off a car’s asking price?
It depends on the car and its market. Car Scout’s suggested opening offer starts about 2% below asking when leverage is limited and reaches about 10% when leverage is strong. It can go as far as 15% below asking when the car is priced above the local market. Treat it as an opening position, not a guaranteed result.
Is the suggested offer range a guaranteed price?
No. It is a starting point based on the listing’s negotiation power and the local market price. Dealers set their own prices, and the final number depends on your negotiation.
Can I search outside my area?
Yes. Search around a ZIP code with a radius you choose, or search nationwide to find the right car wherever it is listed.
Can ZILOCAR negotiate the price for me?
Yes. If you would rather not negotiate yourself, our car buying service’s Price Negotiation plan has an advisor get an itemized out-the-door quote and handle the back-and-forth with the dealer. It costs 40% of savings, capped at $500.00, and nothing if we don’t save you money.
What happens when I find a car I like?
You can open the dealer’s own listing, run a ZILOCAR history report on its VIN, or send the car to our car buying service so an advisor negotiates for you.
