Your Acura VIN, decoded
What you just saw, and what's still hidden
NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Acura is. It does not tell you what it has been through. Used-Acura buyers should specifically verify the 2021–2025 brake pedal pivot pin recall (shared with Honda Pilot), MDX Type-S FI-ECU software, and the long-running Honda fuel pump recall that swept many older Acuras.
| What NHTSA showed you | What the full Zilocar report adds |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer, plant, year, body class | Every reported accident with severity and damage area |
| Engine, drivetrain, fuel type | Odometer readings across the vehicle's life, with rollback flags |
| Open recall campaigns | Title brands (salvage, flood, rebuilt, lemon law buyback) |
| Vehicle type, GVWR | Ownership timeline and how many hands the car has passed through |
| Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers | |
| Lien and finance status | |
| Auction photos from past resale points |
Active recalls across the Acura lineup
Across the Acura lineup, NHTSA recall data aggregated by Zilocar shows the MDX, TLX, and Integra lead in active 2025 campaigns. The brake pedal pivot pin recall (Honda codes FLX and XLY) covers 2021–2025 Acura TLX, 2023–2025 Acura MDX, and 2023–2025 Honda Pilot vehicles built across multiple production years. The MDX Type-S and TLX Type-S FI-ECU software recall (Honda codes EL1 and AL0) covers 2022–2025 MDX Type-S and 2021–2025 TLX Type-S vehicles.

What the free decode does not show
A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:
- Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
- Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
- Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
- Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
- Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
- Lien and finance records
- Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points
NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025, and luxury crossovers including the Acura MDX rank among the higher-target theft models in some metro areas. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Acura VIN
An Acura VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. JH4 marks a Japan-built Acura passenger car (NSX historical, Integra, ILX, RLX historical, TLX) from Honda's Sayama or Suzuka plants. 19U marks a US-built Acura passenger car from Honda's Marysville, Ohio plant (TLX, ILX historical, RLX). 19V marks a US-built Acura SUV. 5J8 and 2HN mark Canadian-built Acura SUVs (MDX, RDX) from Honda Manufacturing of Alliston, Ontario. JH5 marks Japan-built Acura SUVs. Position 10 is the model year code; position 11 is the plant. For VIN-specific recall completion status direct from American Honda, the Acura Owners recall lookup is the manufacturer source.
The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents. The AcuraLink mobile app also displays it under vehicle details.
Recent Acura recall campaigns to verify
NHTSA Campaign brake pedal pivot pin (Honda codes FLX and XLY, July 2025): Covers 2021–2025 Acura TLX, 2023–2025 Acura MDX, and 2023–2025 Honda Pilot vehicles. The brake pedal pivot pin was not secured properly, which can cause the pedal to shift out of position, failing FMVSS 108 and FMVSS 135. A brake pedal that shifts out of position can prevent the driver from applying brakes as intended. Dealers inspect and replace the brake pedal assembly as necessary at no cost.
NHTSA Campaign Type-S FI-ECU software (Honda codes EL1 and AL0, March 2025): Covers 2022–2025 Acura MDX Type-S, 2023–2025 Honda Pilot, and 2021–2025 Acura TLX Type-S vehicles. A software error in the fuel injection electronic control unit may cause an engine stall or loss of power. Remedy is a free FI-ECU software reprogram.
NHTSA Campaign 2025 MDX center display (Honda code RKZ, March 2025): Covers 2025 Acura MDX vehicles where the touchscreen in the center console may go blank, resulting in the rearview camera image not displaying (FMVSS 111 noncompliance). Dealers replace the center information display unit at no cost.
NHTSA Campaign 2025 RDX electric power steering (Honda code GMS, September 2025): Covers 2025 Acura RDX vehicles where EPS assist software may not be calibrated properly, causing the EPS system to enter failsafe mode and resulting in loss of power steering assist. Dealers reprogram the EPS software at no cost.

Common Acura issues used-car buyers should verify
MDX tailgate moisture (2014–2020, Honda code FLI): A May 2025 recall covered 2014–2020 Acura MDX vehicles where moisture entering the tailgate lid light assembly and wiring harness can cause interior and exterior lights to fail, including lid lights, position lights, license plate lights, and taillights. Vehicles previously repaired under NHTSA recall 19V-256 need the new remedy. Dealers inspect the wiring and install a fuse harness, replace the lid light, and repair the body dust sealer at no cost.
Honda fuel pump recall (2013–2023 multiple Acura models): Covers 2013–2023 Acura ILX, MDX, MDX Hybrid, RDX, RLX, TLX, and NSX, plus a wide range of Honda models. The fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail, causing engine stall while driving. This is one of Honda's largest recalls in history. Dealers replace the fuel pump module at no cost.
Integra steering gearbox (2023–2025 plus 2024–2025 Integra Type S): A recent recall covered 2023–2025 Acura Integra and 2024–2025 Acura Integra Type S vehicles (along with Honda Civic, CR-V, HR-V) where the steering gearbox assembly may have been manufactured incorrectly, causing excessive internal friction and difficulty steering.
