Your Genesis VIN, decoded

What you just saw, and what's still hidden

NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Genesis is. It does not tell you what it has been through. Used-Genesis buyers should specifically verify the April 2026 fuel pipe leak recall (Genesis code 033G, 2022–2026 GV70, 2023–2025 G90, 2021–2025 G80/GV80), the layered instrument panel software recalls (Hyundai code 026G original March 2025, expansion February 2026), the December 2025 side curtain airbag recall (codes 289 and 029G), the long-running fuel pump recalls (016G, 022G expanding 23V-630), the seat belt pretensioner explosion recall (012G superseding 21V-796), the ICCU 12-volt battery recall (272 and 025G expanding 24V-204), and the parked-outside starter solenoid water fire advisory (codes 254 and 018G).

Active recalls across the Genesis lineup

Across the Genesis lineup, NHTSA recall data aggregated by Zilocar shows the GV70, GV80, G80, G90, and GV60 lead in active 2024–2026 campaigns. Genesis is the luxury division of Hyundai, and most Genesis recalls are filed under Hyundai Motor America with a Genesis code (G suffix). The fuel pump issue alone has produced three sequential recalls (016G, 022G, and earlier 23V-630), with the April 2026 fuel pipe leak recall (033G) representing the latest fuel system action. EV-specific Genesis vehicles (GV60, Electrified GV70, Electrified G80) also share the broader Hyundai/Kia/Genesis ICCU 12-volt battery recall family with IONIQ 5/6 and Kia EV6/EV9.

What the free decode does not show

A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:

  • Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
  • Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
  • Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
  • Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
  • Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
  • Lien and finance records
  • Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points

NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025. While Genesis vehicles do not currently rank among the most-stolen US models, the brand's growing share of the luxury market and the high vehicle values make theft history worth verifying. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Genesis VIN

A Genesis VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. KMHL and KMTC mark Korea-built Genesis sedans and SUVs from Hyundai plants in Ulsan and Asan (G70, G80, G90, GV80). KM8 marks a Korea-built Genesis SUV. Beginning with the 2022 model year, some US-market Genesis GV70 and Electrified GV70 vehicles are built at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) in Montgomery; those carry a 5N WMI prefix matching other US-built Hyundai Group vehicles. Position 11 is the plant code; position 10 is the model year (P=2023, R=2024, S=2025). For VIN-specific recall completion status direct from the manufacturer, the Genesis Owner Recalls page is the manufacturer source.

The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents. The MyGenesis mobile app and Genesis Connected Services infotainment system also display it.

Common Genesis issues used-car buyers should verify

Hyundai codes 254 and 018G, starter solenoid water fire (park-outside advisory): Covers 2015–2016 Genesis, 2017–2019 Genesis G80, G90, and 2019 G70 vehicles where water may enter the starter solenoid and cause an electrical short, resulting in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers install a remedy relay kit in the engine junction box free of charge.

Hyundai code 021G, ICCU original recall (May 2024): Covers 2022–2024 IONIQ 5, 2023–2024 IONIQ 6, Genesis GV60, GV70 Electrified, and GV80 Electrified for the ICCU issue. This was superseded by codes 272 and 025G.

2024 Genesis GV70 transmission control harness water: Covers 2024 Genesis GV70 vehicles where water may leak into the transmission control harness, causing a short circuit and unexpectedly shifting the transmission from Park to Neutral. This is a potential rollaway concern.

2023–2025 Genesis GV60 windshield molding detachment: Covers 2023–2025 Genesis GV60 electric vehicles where the stainless-steel molding at the top of the windshield assembly may detach.

2023–2026 G90 / 2024–2026 Santa Fe seat belt anchors: Covers 2023–2025 Hyundai IONIQ 6, 2023–2026 Genesis G90, 2024–2026 Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Hybrid vehicles where the driver and passenger seat belt anchors may detach.

Brand age context (used buyer note): Genesis launched as a standalone luxury brand in 2017 (separate from the Hyundai Genesis sedan that existed 2009–2016). Used buyers comparing 2015–2016 "Genesis" vehicles should note these were Hyundai Genesis models, not Genesis-branded; recall codes for those vehicles often appear under Hyundai with no Genesis G-suffix code.
