Your INFINITI VIN, decoded

What you just saw, and what's still hidden

NHTSA's free decode confirms what the INFINITI is. It does not tell you what it has been through. Used-INFINITI buyers should specifically verify the 2025 QX60 brake caliper recall (shared with Nissan Murano and Pathfinder), the engine bearings recall that swept nearly half a million Nissan/INFINITI vehicles, and the 2024 QX60 seat belt pretensioner recall.

Active recalls across the INFINITI lineup

Across the INFINITI lineup, NHTSA recall data aggregated by Zilocar shows the QX60 leads in active 2025 campaigns. The 2025 QX60 front brake caliper recall (Nissan codes PD137 and PD138, May 2025) covers QX60, Nissan Murano, and Nissan Pathfinder vehicles for brake caliper assemblies that may have reduced strength. Separately, a Nissan/INFINITI engine bearings recall covering nearly half a million 2025 Nissan Rogue, Altima, and INFINITI QX50, QX55, and QX60 vehicles addresses potential engine failure from defective bearings.

What the free decode does not show

A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:

  • Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
  • Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
  • Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
  • Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
  • Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
  • Lien and finance records
  • Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points

NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025, and luxury sedans and SUVs including the INFINITI Q50, Q60, QX60, and QX80 rank among higher-value theft targets in some metro areas. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your INFINITI VIN

An INFINITI VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. JN1 marks a Japan-built INFINITI passenger car (Q50, Q60, Q70 historical) from Tochigi or Oppama plants. JN8 marks a Japan-built INFINITI SUV (QX80, older QX models). 5N1 marks a US-built INFINITI from Nissan's Smyrna, Tennessee plant (QX60). 3PC marks a Mexico-built INFINITI from the Aguascalientes plant (QX50, QX55). Position 10 is the model year code; position 11 is the plant. The INFINITI brand operates as Nissan's luxury division, and many recall campaigns affect both Nissan and INFINITI vehicles built on shared platforms. For VIN-specific recall completion status direct from the manufacturer, the INFINITI Recall Lookup is the manufacturer source.

The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents. The MyINFINITI mobile app and INFINITI InTouch infotainment system also display it.

Recent INFINITI recall campaigns to verify

NHTSA Campaign 2025 QX60 front brake caliper (Nissan codes PD137 and PD138, May 2025): Covers 2025 INFINITI QX60, Nissan Murano, and Nissan Pathfinder vehicles. One or both front brake caliper assemblies may have reduced strength and could break, failing FMVSS 135 (Light Vehicle Brake Systems). A broken front brake caliper can cause loss of front brake function. Dealers inspect and replace front brake caliper assemblies as necessary at no cost. Owner letters mailed May 9, 2025.

Nissan/INFINITI engine bearings recall (2025, ~half million vehicles): Covers various model years of the Nissan Rogue, Nissan Altima, INFINITI QX50, QX55, and QX60 vehicles for potential engine failure resulting from defective engine bearings. This is the largest single INFINITI-affected recall of 2025.

NHTSA Campaign 2024 Pathfinder and QX60 seat belt pretensioner (April 2024): Covers 2024 Pathfinder and INFINITI QX60 vehicles where the lap belt pretensioner in the left-side front seat belt assembly may be improperly secured due to a missing rivet, failing FMVSS 208, 209, and 210. An unsecured lap belt pretensioner will not properly restrain an occupant during a crash. Dealers inspect and replace left-side front lap seat belt pretensioner assemblies as necessary at no cost.

NHTSA Campaign 2022–2024 QX60 Adaptive Front-Light System (Nissan code PC994, January 2024): Covers 2022–2024 INFINITI QX60 vehicles where, at certain high speeds, the AFS may incorrectly adjust the headlights downward, reducing visibility. Dealers reconfigure the Intelligent Power Distribution Module (IPDM) settings free of charge.

NHTSA Campaign 2025–2026 QX80 IVI rearview camera: Covers 2025–2026 INFINITI QX80 vehicles where a software error in the In-Vehicle Infotainment system at startup may prevent the rearview camera image from displaying when shifted into reverse.

Common INFINITI issues used-car buyers should verify

2020 Murano, 2021 QX50, Q50, QX60 steering knuckle/rear axle (2021): A 2021 NHTSA recall covered 2020 Nissan Murano, INFINITI QX60, 2021 Nissan GT-R, INFINITI QX50, and Q50 vehicles where the front steering knuckle or rear axle housing may have insufficient strength due to improper heat-treatment. Used buyers of these models should verify recall completion.

2014–2017 QX60 Hybrid Powertrain Control Module software (R21B4/R21B5): Covered 2014–2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, 2015–2016 Murano Hybrid, and 2014–2017 INFINITI QX60 Hybrid vehicles where the HPCM software may shut down the hybrid system and engine, causing loss of drive power. Free reprogram remedy.

Takata airbag inflator and Occupant Classification System: Older INFINITI vehicles (Q50, Q70, QX60, QX80 from 2003–2017 range) may be affected by the Takata airbag campaign or by the Nissan-wide Occupant Classification System recall covering 2013–2017 vintage vehicles. NHTSA's Takata Recall Spotlight tracks remedy status.
