Decode any 17-character Saturn VIN free with NHTSA's vehicle catalog. See specs, plant, model year, and historical safety recalls in seconds. Because GM discontinued Saturn in 2010, a full Zilocar vehicle history report is especially important for used-Saturn buyers, with accident, title, odometer, and ownership records that NHTSA alone does not show.

Your Saturn VIN, decoded
What you just saw, and what's still hidden
NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Saturn is. It does not tell you what it has been through across what may now be 15+ years of ownership history. Used-Saturn buyers should specifically verify the 2008–2009 Saturn Astra Takata driver airbag inflator recall, the 2003–2007 Saturn Ion plus 2007 Saturn Sky ignition switch recall (paired with Chevrolet Cobalt/HHR and Pontiac G5/Solstice), the 2007–2010 Saturn Aura transmission shift cable recall, and any title brand history (salvage, flood, rebuilt) given the brand's discontinuation.
| What NHTSA showed you | What the full Zilocar report adds |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer, plant, year, body class | Every reported accident with severity and damage area |
| Engine, drivetrain, fuel type | Odometer readings across the vehicle's life, with rollback flags |
| Open recall campaigns | Title brands (salvage, flood, rebuilt, lemon law buyback) |
| Vehicle type, GVWR | Ownership timeline and how many hands the car has passed through |
| Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers | |
| Lien and finance status | |
| Auction photos from past resale points |
Discontinued-brand context: extra due diligence matters
General Motors discontinued the Saturn brand in 2010 as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization, after a planned sale to Penske Automotive Group fell through. All Saturn vehicles in the US market are now at least 15 model years old, and the brand has no current manufacturer warranty support, no new vehicle production, and no dedicated dealer network. Three categories of due diligence matter more than they would for an active brand:
Title and salvage history. Discontinued-brand vehicles disproportionately appear in salvage auctions, parts-only sales, and rebuilt-title resales. A Zilocar report flags title brands across all reporting states.
Open recall completion. Multiple major safety recalls remain relevant for Saturn buyers, especially the Saturn Astra Takata airbag and the Saturn Ion / Sky ignition switch campaigns. Both involve fatality-linked defects.
Parts availability and service network. GM continues to service safety recalls for Saturn vehicles at Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac dealerships. General service and parts are available through the GM parts network, but availability is gradually thinning for Saturn-specific components like Vue first-generation drivetrain parts.

What the free decode does not show
A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:
- Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
- Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
- Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
- Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
- Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
- Lien and finance records
- Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points
NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025. While Saturn vehicles do not rank among the most-stolen US models, older discontinued-brand vehicles are more frequently exposed to salvage rebuild and auction pathway pricing because of their age and parts demand. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Saturn VIN
A Saturn VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. 1G8 marks a US-built Saturn from the Saturn Spring Hill, Tennessee plant (S-Series 1991–2002, Vue first-generation 2002–2007, Aura, Outlook). The Saturn Astra (2008–2009) was actually a rebadged Opel Astra H built in Antwerp, Belgium, and carries a W08 WMI prefix. The Saturn Ion (2003–2007) was built at GM's Lordstown, Ohio plant. The Saturn Sky (2007–2010) was built at GM's Wilmington, Delaware plant alongside the Pontiac Solstice. Position 11 is the plant code; position 10 is the model year. Because Saturn no longer operates as a brand, recall completion status is most reliably checked via the GM Takata Recall Lookup (Saturn Service) site.
The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents.
Saturn Takata airbag recall and other major historical campaigns
Saturn Astra (2008–2009) Takata driver airbag module recall (NHTSA Campaign 16V-063 and related, GM number 28810): GM agreed to replace the driver's frontal airbag module on Saturn Astra vehicles subject to the Takata recall, free of charge. Initial replacement parts were unavailable when the recall began in March 2016 but became available in subsequent program updates.
GM ignition switch recall (February 2014, expanded March 2014): Covered 2003–2007 Saturn Ion and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles along with 2005–2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2007 Pontiac G5, 2006–2007 Chevrolet HHR, and 2006–2007 Pontiac Solstice. The weight on the key ring, road conditions, or another jarring event can cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling airbag deployment. Dealers replace the ignition switch free of charge. Recall began March 10, 2014. This recall was tied to multiple fatalities and a major GM legal settlement.
2007–2010 Saturn Aura + 2008–2010 Chevrolet Malibu + Pontiac G6 4-speed automatic shift cable: Covers 4-speed automatic transmission shift cable end tab fracture that can cause the shift lever and transmission gear to not match, creating a rollaway risk after the driver exits. Dealers install a retainer over the cable end or replace the shift cable as necessary, free of charge.
Saturn Outlook (2007–2010) Lambda platform parallels: The Saturn Outlook shares the Lambda platform with the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia, including the 2008–2013 side airbag wiring harness recall affecting roughly 1.1 million Lambda vehicles total.
Saturn Vue first generation (2002–2007) CVT concerns: The original Saturn Vue with the VTI continuously variable transmission has well-documented reliability concerns. Used buyers should look for documented CVT replacement history or avoid CVT-equipped 2002–2005 Vues entirely.
Where to get repairs: Saturn vehicle recall repairs can be completed at any Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, or Cadillac dealership.

Common used-Saturn buyer issues
Saturn polymer body panel age concerns: The S-Series (1991–2002) used dent-resistant polymer body panels. While these resist parking-lot dings, the polymer can warp or discolor over decades. Verify panel condition in person.
Saturn-Subaru and Saturn-Honda corporate context: Saturn experimented with rebadging partnerships during its later years, but the brand's flagship models were predominantly GM-platform vehicles after 2002.
Older Takata airbag remedy (beyond Astra): While the most prominent Saturn Takata coverage is on the Astra, older Saturn vehicles built 2003–2010 should be checked closely for Takata remedy completion at GM dealerships, per NHTSA's Takata Recall Spotlight.
Title brand prevalence: Because Saturn vehicles are typically affordable used cars now, salvage rebuild and rebuilt-title resales are more common in this brand than in active-brand equivalents at the same price point. A Zilocar history report is the most reliable way to verify title status.
