Decode any 17-character Pontiac VIN free with NHTSA's vehicle catalog. See specs, plant, model year, and historical safety recalls in seconds. Because Pontiac was discontinued by General Motors in 2010, a full Zilocar vehicle history report is especially important for used-Pontiac buyers, with accident, title, odometer, and ownership records that NHTSA alone does not show.

Your Pontiac VIN, decoded
What you just saw, and what's still hidden
NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Pontiac is. It does not tell you what it has been through across what may now be 15+ years of ownership history. Used-Pontiac buyers should specifically verify the do-not-drive advisory for 2003–2004 Pontiac Vibe Takata airbag inflator recall, the broader 2003–2010 Pontiac Vibe Takata coverage, the GM ignition switch recall affecting 2007 G5 and 2006–2007 Solstice, the 2007–2010 G6 transmission shift cable recall, and any title brand history (salvage, flood, rebuilt) given the brand's discontinuation.
| What NHTSA showed you | What the full Zilocar report adds |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer, plant, year, body class | Every reported accident with severity and damage area |
| Engine, drivetrain, fuel type | Odometer readings across the vehicle's life, with rollback flags |
| Open recall campaigns | Title brands (salvage, flood, rebuilt, lemon law buyback) |
| Vehicle type, GVWR | Ownership timeline and how many hands the car has passed through |
| Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers | |
| Lien and finance status | |
| Auction photos from past resale points |
Discontinued-brand context: extra due diligence matters
General Motors discontinued the Pontiac brand in 2010 as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. All Pontiac vehicles in the US market are now at least 15 model years old, and the brand has no current manufacturer warranty support, no new vehicle production, and no dedicated dealer network. Three categories of due diligence matter more than they would for an active brand:
Title and salvage history. Discontinued-brand vehicles disproportionately appear in salvage auctions, parts-only sales, and rebuilt-title resales. A Zilocar report flags title brands across all reporting states.
Open recall completion, especially Takata. The Pontiac Vibe (2003–2010) is one of the most heavily affected vehicles in the Takata airbag campaign. GM issued a "DO NOT DRIVE" advisory for certain 2003–2004 Pontiac Vibe vehicles equipped with a defective front passenger airbag inflator. Vibe owners should treat this as an immediate safety concern, not a deferred maintenance item.
Parts availability and service. GM still services Pontiac vehicles for safety recalls at Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac dealerships. General service and parts are available through the GM parts network, but availability is gradually thinning for some Pontiac-unique components.

What the free decode does not show
A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:
- Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
- Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
- Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
- Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
- Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
- Lien and finance records
- Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points
NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025. Older Pontiac models including the Grand Am, Grand Prix, and G6 historically appeared in more theft-recovery records due to their volume and age profile. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Pontiac VIN
A Pontiac VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. 1G2 marks a US-built Pontiac passenger car (G6, G8, Grand Prix, Grand Am, Bonneville, Sunfire, Solstice, Vibe-NUMMI variants). 2G2 marks a Canada-built Pontiac. The Pontiac Vibe (2003–2010) was a unique case: it was built jointly with Toyota at the NUMMI plant in Fremont, California, and many Vibes carry Toyota-format WMI prefixes alongside or instead of Pontiac WMI codes. The Pontiac G8 (2008–2009) was built in Australia by Holden and carries a 6G2 WMI prefix. Plant codes in position 11 reflect assembly plants such as Lordstown, Ohio (G5, Vibe historical), Lansing, Michigan (G6, Solstice), Fremont, California NUMMI (Vibe). Position 10 is the model year code. Because Pontiac no longer operates as a brand, recall completion status is most reliably checked via the GM Takata Recall Lookup (Pontiac Service) site, which covers Pontiac Vibe alongside other GM brands.
The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents.
Pontiac Takata airbag recall and other major historical campaigns
Pontiac Vibe (2003–2010) Takata coverage and "DO NOT DRIVE" advisory: Per NHTSA's Takata Recall Spotlight, 2003–2005 Pontiac Vibe vehicles were among the earliest Takata-affected models, with later actions expanding coverage through the 2010 model year. GM has issued a "DO NOT DRIVE" advisory for certain 2003–2004 Pontiac Vibe vehicles equipped with a defective front passenger airbag inflator. A 2024 expansion (approximately 11,000 Vibe units) covered Takata airbag inflator concerns. 2009–2010 Pontiac Vibe vehicles were recalled separately over rupturing airbag inflators.
Pontiac Vibe SRS circuit recall (2013): Toyota and GM jointly recalled 2003–2004 Corolla, Corolla Matrix, and Pontiac Vibe vehicles for supplemental restraint system circuits susceptible to internal shorting, which could cause inadvertent airbag or seat belt pretensioner deployment. Dealers install a supplemental harness with an electrical filter between the airbag control module and wire harness free of charge. Recall began March 13, 2013.
GM ignition switch recall (February 2014, expanded March 2014): Covered 2005–2007 Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles, then expanded to include 2006–2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice plus 2003–2007 Saturn Ion and 2007 Saturn Sky. The weight on the key ring or road conditions can cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling airbag deployment. Dealers replace the ignition switch free of charge. Recall began March 10, 2014.
2007–2010 G6 transmission shift cable (2007–2010 Saturn Aura + 2008–2010 Chevrolet Malibu + Pontiac G6 4-speed automatic): Covers 4-speed automatic transmission shift cable end tab fracture that can cause the shift lever and transmission gear to not match, creating a rollaway risk after the driver exits. Dealers install a retainer over the cable end or replace the shift cable as necessary, free of charge.
Saab 9-3/9-5 Takata parallels: Saab vehicles are covered under the broader GM Takata program alongside Pontiac. Pontiac G3 (2009–2010, a rebadged Chevrolet Aveo from GM Korea) carries its own KL2 WMI prefix.
Where to get repairs: Pontiac vehicle recall repairs can be completed at any Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, or Cadillac dealership.

Common used-Pontiac buyer issues
Pontiac G8 (2008–2009) Australian production specifics: The G8 GT and GXP were built in Australia by Holden on the Zeta platform shared with the Chevrolet Caprice PPV. Used G8 buyers should verify any prior body damage repair, as parts sourcing for the unique Australian sheet metal is more challenging than for typical GM models.
Pontiac Solstice GXP turbocharger concerns: The 2007–2009 Solstice GXP with the LNF 2.0L turbocharged Ecotec engine is known for timing chain stretch under high mileage; check for documented service of the timing chain.
Pontiac Vibe NUMMI production overlap with Toyota Corolla Matrix: Mechanical parts for the Vibe overlap substantially with the Toyota Corolla Matrix (also NUMMI-built). Parts availability remains strong through Toyota channels for shared components.
Pontiac Aztek (2001–2005) market context: The Aztek's distinctive styling has driven collector interest in recent years. Used buyers should verify body and frame condition, as the front fascia and unique trim panels are increasingly difficult to source.
Older Takata airbag remedy: Pontiac vehicles built 2003–2010 may be part of the broader Takata airbag campaign per NHTSA's Takata Recall Spotlight. In addition to the Vibe coverage above, older Pontiac G6, Grand Prix, GTO, Solstice, and Torrent models should be checked closely for Takata remedy completion at GM dealerships.
Free vs. paid Pontiac VIN check options
| Tool | Best for | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| NHTSA vPIC | Manufacturer + plant + basic specs | ~15 standard fields, no auth required |
| GM Takata Recall Lookup (Pontiac Service) site | Pontiac Takata recall completion status | GM-facilitated recall list with VIN-specific status |
| Zilocar vehicle history report | Complete history before you buy | Accidents, title, odometer, owners, recalls, theft, auction photos |
The NHTSA decode at the top of this page is free and returns the official manufacturer-filed Pontiac VIN data. For Pontiac Takata recall completion status, the GM Takata Recall Lookup (Pontiac Service) site is the GM-managed source covering the Pontiac Vibe alongside other GM brands. A full Zilocar vehicle history report covers what NHTSA and GM's recall search do not: accident records, title brands, odometer readings, ownership timeline, and auction history. Auction history is particularly relevant for discontinued-brand vehicles where prior salvage rebuild and parts-only resales are more common.
"Very thorough reports, which have helped me IMMENSELY in my used-car buying journey. Believe me, I dodged more than one bullet in buying severely-flawed vehicles that looked great from the outside, but these reports told a very different story." — Zilocar customer review
