NHTSA's free decode confirms what the MINI is. It does not tell you what it has been through. Used-MINI buyers should specifically verify the November 2025 BMW/MINI seat belt retractor torsion bar recall (NHTSA 25V-616, covering 2025–2026 X1, X2, MINI Cooper, Cooper Convertible, Countryman S ALL4, and Countryman SE ALL4), the integrated brake control module servomotor weld recall, and any open BMW Group platform-shared campaigns.

Across the MINI lineup, NHTSA recall data aggregated by Zilocar shows the Cooper, Cooper Convertible, and Countryman lead in active 2025–2026 campaigns. Because MINI is a BMW Group brand, several recall campaigns affect both BMW and MINI models simultaneously — particularly cross-platform actions involving shared components like seat belt retractors, brake control modules, and integrated electronics. NHTSA Campaign 25V-616 (November 2025) is one such cross-brand recall covering 1,571 BMW X1/X2 and MINI Cooper/Cooper Convertible/Countryman ALL4 vehicles total.

NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025, and luxury small cars including the MINI Cooper rank among targeted theft models in some metro areas, often for parts. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

A MINI VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. WMW marks a MINI passenger car built by BMW AG, most commonly at Plant Oxford in the UK (Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper Convertible, John Cooper Works). WMZ marks a MINI multipurpose passenger vehicle from BMW AG (Countryman). MINI's manufacturing footprint also includes Plant Nedcar in the Netherlands historically (Born plant), and the Countryman is currently produced at BMW Plant Leipzig in Germany. Position 11 reveals the assembly plant code; position 10 is the model year (P=2023, R=2024, S=2025). For VIN-specific recall completion status direct from MINI USA, the MINI USA Recall Lookup is the manufacturer source.
The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents. The MINI Connected mobile app and infotainment system also display it.
NHTSA Campaign 25V-616, BMW/MINI seat belt retractor torsion bar (November 2025): Covers 1,571 vehicles total: certain 2025–2026 BMW X1 and X2, MINI Cooper, MINI Cooper Convertible, Mini Countryman S ALL4, and 2025 MINI Countryman SE ALL4 vehicles. The torsion bar in both front seat belt retractors may have been damaged during production, which may prevent proper occupant restraint during a crash. Affected vehicles were manufactured between June 30 and July 16, 2025. Dealers replace both front seat belt retractors free of charge. Owner notification letters mailed November 13, 2025. VINs searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning November 7, 2025.
BMW/MINI integrated brake control module (broader campaign): Covers certain 2023–2025 BMW X1, 2024–2025 X5, 2025 X6, 2023–2025 X7, 740i, 760i, 2024 XM, 530i, 540i, i7, 750e, X2, 2024–2025 i5, 2024 Rolls Royce Spectre, 2025 MINI Countryman S ALL4, JCW Countryman ALL4, and 2025 MINI Hardtop 2 Door (Cooper, Cooper S) vehicles. The welds in the servomotor of the integrated brake control module may break, causing loss of power brake assist and rear brake function. Additionally, the Antilock Brake System (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system may not function. Owners may contact BMW customer service.
BMW Group cross-platform recall watch: Because MINI is part of BMW Group, MINI buyers should monitor recall campaigns affecting BMW X1, X2 (shared UKL platform with current Countryman) and BMW 1-Series / 2-Series Active Tourer historically. Shared platform components sometimes trigger MINI-specific recalls weeks or months after the BMW-side announcement.

Smaller recall footprint than full BMW brand: MINI typically has fewer total NHTSA campaigns than the full BMW brand because of smaller US sales volume. However, shared BMW Group platforms mean MINI is exposed to many of the same component-supplier issues. Reviewing both MINI and BMW recall history when evaluating shared platform years is worthwhile.
Older Takata airbag remedy: MINI vehicles built 2003–2017 may be part of the broader Takata airbag campaign per NHTSA's Takata Recall Spotlight. Older Cooper, Cooper S, Clubman, Countryman, Paceman, and Roadster models should be checked closely for Takata remedy completion.
Plant Oxford UK manufacturing context: The MINI factory in Oxford, England has been continuously producing MINI since 2001 under BMW Group ownership. Used MINI buyers can verify Oxford build via VIN position 11 plant code (A typically indicates Oxford). The Born plant in the Netherlands historically produced some Countryman models before that production moved to BMW Plant Leipzig.

The NHTSA decode at the top of this page is free and returns the official manufacturer-filed MINI VIN data. For the most current MINI-specific recall completion status, the MINI USA Recall Lookup is the manufacturer source. A full Zilocar vehicle history report covers what NHTSA and the manufacturer's recall search do not: accident records, title brands, odometer readings, ownership timeline, and auction history. Auction history is particularly useful for older Cooper S and John Cooper Works models, where enthusiast modifications and prior performance damage are common.
