Free Saab VIN check for discontinued brand. Decode any Saab VIN with NHTSA, see open recalls, run a full Zilocar history report for accidents and title.

Decode any 17-character Saab VIN free with NHTSA's vehicle catalog. See specs, plant, model year, and historical safety recalls in seconds. Your Saab VIN, decoded

What you just saw, and what's still hidden

NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Saab is. It does not tell you what it has been through across what may now be 15+ years of ownership history. Used-Saab buyers should specifically verify the Takata driver airbag inflator recall (NHTSA Campaign 16V-063, covering 2006–2011 Saab 9-3 and 2006–2009 Saab 9-5), the 2005–2006 Saab 9-2X Takata coverage (built by Subaru), and any title brand history (salvage, flood, rebuilt) given the brand's discontinuation and the resulting higher likelihood of parts-only or auction-pathway resales.

Discontinued-brand context: extra due diligence matters

Saab Automobile filed for bankruptcy in December 2011 and ceased production in 2012 after General Motors divested the brand and a subsequent attempted sale to Spyker Cars and others fell through. All Saab vehicles in the US market are at least 13 model years old, and the brand has no current manufacturer warranty support, no new vehicle production, and no dedicated dealer network. Because of this, three categories of due diligence matter more than they would for an active brand:

Title and salvage history. Discontinued-brand vehicles disproportionately appear in salvage auctions, parts-only sales, and rebuilt-title resales. A Zilocar report flags title brands across all reporting states.

Open recall completion. The Takata driver airbag inflator recall remains a serious open issue for many 2006–2011 9-3 and 2006–2009 9-5 owners. General Motors has agreed to facilitate repairs at Cadillac dealerships under recall bulletins 15141 and 15143 (DCS4533, August 2017).

Parts availability and service network. Saab Official Service Centers still exist in many regions, but parts supply for older 9-3, 9-5, 9-7X, and 9-4X models is gradually thinning. Buyers should verify any prior major service was completed before resale.

What the free decode does not show

A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:

  • Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
  • Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
  • Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
  • Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
  • Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
  • Lien and finance records
  • Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points

NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025. While Saab vehicles do not rank among the most-stolen models, older discontinued-brand vehicles are more frequently exposed to salvage rebuild and auction pathway pricing because of their age and parts demand. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Saab VIN

A Saab VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. YS3 marks a Sweden-built Saab from Saab's Trollhättan plant. Some Saab 9-2X vehicles (2005–2006) were rebadged Subaru Imprezas built in Japan and carry Subaru-format JF1 or JF2 WMI prefixes. The 2005–2009 Saab 9-7X was a rebadged Chevrolet TrailBlazer built at GM's Moraine, Ohio plant and carries a 5S3 WMI prefix in some references. Position 11 is the plant code; position 10 is the model year. Note Saab production codes use a 1981+ 17-character VIN format throughout the brand's modern era. Because Saab no longer operates as a standalone manufacturer, recall completion status for the Takata driver airbag campaign and similar GM-era actions is most reliably checked via the GM Takata Recall Lookup (Saab Service) site, which covers Saab 9-2X, 9-3, and 9-5 alongside other GM brands.

The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents.

Saab Takata airbag recall details

NHTSA Campaign 16V-063, Takata driver airbag inflator (February 2016, GM Product Safety Recall 15041): Covers all 2006–2011 Saab 9-3 and 2006–2009 Saab 9-5 vehicles. Front driver airbag inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation, especially in hot and humid climates, projecting metal fragments into the cabin during deployment. NHTSA campaign 16V-063 covers 2006–2011 9-3 and 2006–2009 9-5 (excluding vehicles never registered in high-humidity zone states: Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Guam, Puerto Rico, Saipan, U.S. Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands). Replacement parts became available March 31, 2017 (for 2006–2009 vehicles) and September 30, 2017 (for 2010–2011 vehicles).

2003–2011 Saab 9-3 + 2010–2011 9-5 expanded coverage: Some Saab 9-3 vehicles back to 2003 model year and 2010–2011 9-5 vehicles also use Takata-supplied airbag components and have been subject to expansion notices over time. The 2011 Saab 9-4X (a one-year-only Cadillac SRX-platform SUV built at GM Ramos Arizpe, Mexico) shares some GM-era components.

Saab 9-2X (2005–2006): This rebadged Subaru Impreza model is covered under Subaru-side Takata recalls in some respects but also appears on GM Takata coverage lists.

Saturn Astra parallels: The Takata driver airbag module replacement program covers Saturn Astra alongside Saab 9-3 and 9-5; some recall bulletins handle these brands together because both were GM orphan brands at the time of the original campaign.

Where to get repairs: Saab 9-2X, 9-3, and 9-5 owners can complete the free Takata Airbag Safety Recall repair at any Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac dealership or Saab Official Service Center. GM has confirmed parts are available for the Takata Airbag Safety Recall as of recent program updates.

Enter your VIN at the top of this page to see whether your vehicle is included in any of these campaigns.

Common used-Saab buyer issues

Saab Direct Ignition (DI) cassettes: The Saab DI cassette is a brand-specific ignition component prone to failure across the 9-3 and 9-5 lineup. Replacement is straightforward, but a recent DI cassette replacement is a good service record to ask for.

Saab Trionic engine management: The Trionic 5, 7, and 8 engine management systems are unique to Saab and require specialty diagnostic tools (Tech II / TIS2000 or aftermarket equivalents). Used buyers should verify any diagnostic codes were addressed by a Saab specialist rather than a general independent shop.

9-3 SS automatic transmission concerns: The 5-speed automatic transmission in 9-3 SportSedan and SportCombi models is known for sensitivity to fluid neglect. Verify a documented fluid change history.

9-5 (1998–2009) sludge concerns: The 9-5 with the 2.3T engine had a notorious sludging issue addressed under earlier service bulletins. Verify oil change frequency and any documented engine rebuild history.

Saab 9-7X parts overlap with Chevrolet TrailBlazer: The 2005–2009 Saab 9-7X is a rebadged GM 360 platform SUV; most mechanical parts are shared with Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, and Buick Rainier, which simplifies parts sourcing significantly compared to other Saab models.

The NHTSA decode at the top of this page is free and returns the official manufacturer-filed Saab VIN data. For Saab Takata recall completion status, the GM Takata Recall Lookup (Saab Service) site is the GM-managed source covering Saab 9-2X, 9-3, and 9-5. A full Zilocar vehicle history report covers what NHTSA and GM's recall search do not: accident records, title brands, odometer readings, ownership timeline, and auction history. Auction history is particularly relevant for discontinued-brand vehicles where prior salvage rebuild patterns and parts-only resales are more common.

"Very thorough reports, which have helped me IMMENSELY in my used-car buying journey. Believe me, I dodged more than one bullet in buying severely-flawed vehicles that looked great from the outside, but these reports told a very different story." — Zilocar customer review
