Your Polestar VIN, decoded

What you just saw, and what's still hidden

NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Polestar is. It does not tell you what it has been through. Used-Polestar buyers should specifically verify NHTSA Campaign 25V-615 (Polestar number RP1069), which covers all 2021–2025 Polestar 2 vehicles (approximately 27,816 units) for rearview camera image display issues and supersedes prior recalls 24V-477 and 25V-280, and the 2020–2021 Polestar 1 high-voltage battery overheat recall (Polestar number R102316, supersedes 22V-926 / R10216). Used buyers should also check Volvo Cars recall campaigns since Polestar shares the supplier base.

Active recalls across the Polestar lineup

Across the Polestar lineup, NHTSA recall data aggregated by Zilocar shows the Polestar 2 dominates the active 2024–2026 campaigns. The recurring rearview camera "Camera is temporarily unavailable" issue has produced three sequential recalls (24V-477, then 25V-280 superseding it, then 25V-615 superseding both) covering all 2021–2025 Polestar 2 vehicles produced for the US market. Polestar 2 production for the US ended November 22, 2024, but recall service obligations continue. The Polestar 1 high-voltage battery recall (R102316) remains relevant for the small population of 2020–2021 Polestar 1 PHEVs sold in the US.

What the free decode does not show

A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:

  • Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
  • Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
  • Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
  • Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
  • Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
  • Lien and finance records
  • Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points

NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025. While Polestar vehicles do not rank among the most-stolen US models, their high transaction values make theft history worth verifying for any used purchase. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Polestar VIN

A Polestar VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. LPS marks a China-built Polestar from Geely Holding Group's manufacturing facilities — most Polestar 2 vehicles were built at Geely's Luqiao plant in Taizhou, China. The Polestar 3 is built at Volvo Cars Charleston, South Carolina (some early production) and at Chengdu, China (primary). The Polestar 4 is built at Hangzhou Bay, China. The Polestar 1 (2020–2021) was a low-volume halo PHEV built at the dedicated Polestar Production Centre in Chengdu, China. Position 11 is the plant code; position 10 is the model year (M=2021, N=2022, P=2023, R=2024, S=2025). For VIN-specific recall completion status direct from Polestar, the Polestar Recall Lookup is the manufacturer source.

The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents. The Polestar app and Polestar OS infotainment system (built on Android Automotive) also display it.

Recent Polestar recall campaigns to verify

NHTSA Campaign 25V-615, Polestar number RP1069 — Polestar 2 rearview camera (September 2025, 27,816 vehicles): Covers ALL 2021–2025 Polestar 2 vehicles from start of production (July 9, 2020) to end of production for the US market (November 22, 2024). The rearview camera may display a "Camera is temporarily unavailable" message instead of the rear view when the driver shifts into reverse (FMVSS 111 noncompliance). This recall supersedes prior NHTSA Campaign 24V-477 and 25V-280 (Polestar number RP1056); vehicles previously repaired under those earlier recalls will need to have the new remedy performed. Component supplier identified as Volvo Car Corporation of Sweden. Polestar is developing a final software OTA fix anticipated for the end of Q1 2026 or beginning of Q2 2026. Interim owner notification letters mailed November 7, 2025. Polestar reported 3 technical reports involving 5 vehicles before the field action decision.

Polestar number R102316, Polestar 1 high-voltage battery overheat (NHTSA Campaign 23V-361, supersedes 22V-926 / R10216): Covers certain 2020–2021 Polestar 1 vehicles where defective high-voltage battery cells may cause the battery to overheat when fully charged, increasing fire risk. Dealers replace the high-voltage battery pack and restore the electric driving range as necessary, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed July 16, 2023. Vehicles previously repaired under 22V-926 (R10216) still need the new remedy.

Volvo Cars cross-brand recall watch: Because Polestar shares supplier base and some platform components with Volvo Cars, used Polestar buyers should monitor Volvo Cars recall campaigns that may affect shared components — especially battery and electronic systems. The 2024 Volvo EX30 (Polestar 4 platform sibling) and the Polestar 4 share certain electronic and battery components.

Polestar 2 OTA-based recall pattern: Multiple Polestar 2 recalls have been resolved through over-the-air (OTA) software updates rather than physical service visits. Used buyers should verify the vehicle has accepted all relevant OTA updates by checking software version through the Polestar app or service department.

Common Polestar issues used-car buyers should verify

Polestar 2 production end and parts continuity: Polestar 2 production for the US market ended November 22, 2024. Polestar continues to support vehicles with recall service and parts. Used buyers should verify the dealer network distance for their location, as Polestar maintains a smaller direct service footprint than mass-market brands.

Polestar 2 12V battery behavior: Some Polestar 2 owners report 12V battery depletion after extended accessory use or long parking periods. Verify documented 12V battery health.

Polestar 2 trim noise and HVAC behavior: Used Polestar 2 vehicles sometimes report minor trim rattles and HVAC behavior variances that may be addressed through workshop software updates.

Volvo Cars XC40 platform sharing: The Polestar 2 shares its CMA platform with the Volvo XC40 Recharge and Volvo C40 Recharge. Mechanical and powertrain similarities mean parts availability through Volvo channels is generally good for shared components.

Polestar 3 launch quality and recall pattern: As a newer model, the Polestar 3 has had typical early-production refinements. Used Polestar 3 buyers should verify recall service completion given the model's relative newness.

"Very thorough reports, which have helped me IMMENSELY in my used-car buying journey. Believe me, I dodged more than one bullet in buying severely-flawed vehicles that looked great from the outside, but these reports told a very different story." — Zilocar customer review
