Your Rivian VIN, decoded

What you just saw, and what's still hidden

NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Rivian is. It does not tell you what it has been through. Used-Rivian buyers should specifically verify the 2025 Highway Assist software recall (NHTSA 25V-585 covering 24,214 vehicles), HVDB ground strap recall, the February 2026 rear toe link bolt recall (19,641 vehicles), and second-row seat belt retractor bolt status.

Active recalls across the Rivian lineup

Across the Rivian lineup, NHTSA recall data aggregated by Zilocar shows the 2025 R1T and R1S dominate active campaigns. NHTSA Campaign 25V-585 (Rivian code FSAM-1744) covers 24,214 vehicles for Highway Assist software, and the February 2026 rear toe link bolt recall covers 19,641 R1T and R1S vehicles built across multiple model years. Both recalls represent significant portions of Rivian's total US-market production.

What the free decode does not show

A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:

  • Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
  • Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
  • Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
  • Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
  • Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
  • Lien and finance records
  • Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points

NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025, and luxury EVs including Rivian models rank among higher-value targets in some metro areas. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Rivian VIN

A Rivian VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. 7FC marks a Rivian R1T pickup truck. 7PD marks a Rivian R1S SUV. Both vehicles are assembled at Rivian's Normal, Illinois plant, which Rivian acquired from Mitsubishi Motors (the former Diamond-Star Motors joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler). Production date ranges in NHTSA recall reports trace back to August 23, 2021 for the earliest R1T vehicles. Position 10 is the model year code; position 11 is the plant. For VIN-specific recall completion status direct from Rivian, the Rivian Recall Information page is the manufacturer source.

The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents. The Rivian mobile app and the vehicle's center display also show the VIN under vehicle details.

Recent Rivian recall campaigns to verify

NHTSA Campaign 25V-585, Highway Assist software (Rivian code FSAM-1744, November 2025): Covers 24,214 2025 R1T (4,386 units) and R1S (19,828 units) vehicles built with Advanced Driver Assistance System software before Version 2025.18.30. A May 14, 2025 field incident involving a 2025 R1S resulted in a low-speed collision when Highway Assist experienced a one-time functional limitation due to misclassification at very low speed. Remedy is an over-the-air software update; Rivian estimates 99% of affected vehicles had already received the update by the formal recall announcement. Owner letters mailed November 4, 2025.

HVDB ground strap (August 26, 2025): Covers 2025 R1T and R1S vehicles built with an improperly grounded connection inside the High Voltage Distribution Box (HVDB). An improperly grounded electrical connection inside the HVDB may cause the vehicle to experience a loss of motive power without prior warning. Rivian inspects and repairs the HVDB ground strap joint or replaces the high voltage battery pack at no cost.

Rear toe link bolt (February 2026): Covers 19,641 R1T and R1S vehicles total (7,031 R1S SUVs and 12,610 R1T pickups) across 2022–2025 model years built August 23, 2021 through March 10, 2025. Vehicles that received service involving rear suspension toe link joint reassembly using the earlier service procedure may experience toe link joint separation while driving. Rivian is aware of one purported minor injury crash. Customer notification date February 24, 2026. Rivian will repair affected bolts using updated service procedure at no cost.

Front turn signal lamps (2025 R1T and R1S): Covers 2025 R1T and R1S vehicles where one or both front turn signal lamps may not illuminate due to a supplier manufacturing issue, failing FMVSS 108. Rivian replaces affected lamps free of charge.

Second-row seat belt retractor bolt: Covers R1T and R1S vehicles where the second-row driver and/or passenger side seat belt retractor bolt may not have been properly installed during manufacturing. Rivian inspects and properly secures the seat belt retractor assembly free of charge.

Common Rivian issues used-car buyers should verify

NHTSA Campaign 24V-686, 2025 R1S Controls and Displays (FMVSS 101 noncompliance): Covers certain 2025 R1S vehicles that fail to conform to FMVSS 101. Verify whether the OTA remedy has been applied.

EV-specific used-purchase considerations: Battery state of health, charging history, and software version are critical on any used EV. Rivian pushes regular OTA updates that fix many issues silently, so used buyers should ask the seller to confirm the vehicle is running current software and to verify that all OTA recall remedies (including FSAM-1744) have been completed. A Zilocar vehicle history report adds accident and title context that complements the seller's service records.

Plant-history context: Rivian acquired the Normal, Illinois plant in 2017 from Mitsubishi Motors. The plant was originally the Diamond-Star Motors joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler from 1985–2015. The plant's age is irrelevant for current Rivian quality, but worth noting on title and provenance research.
