Decode any 17-character Isuzu VIN free with NHTSA's vehicle catalog. See specs, plant, model year, and historical safety recalls in seconds. Because Isuzu exited the US passenger vehicle market in January 2009, a full Zilocar vehicle history report is especially important for used-Isuzu buyers, with accident, title, odometer, and ownership records that NHTSA alone does not show.

Your Isuzu VIN, decoded
What you just saw, and what's still hidden
NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Isuzu is. It does not tell you what it has been through across what may now be 16+ years of US ownership history. Used-Isuzu buyers should specifically verify the 1996–1999 Isuzu Oasis NADI Takata airbag inflator recall (the Oasis was a rebadged Honda Odyssey), the broader Takata coverage on shared platform vehicles, the longstanding Trooper rollover litigation context for 1990s SUVs, and any title brand history (salvage, flood, rebuilt) given the brand's US passenger market exit.
| What NHTSA showed you | What the full Zilocar report adds |

| Engine, drivetrain, fuel type | Odometer readings across the vehicle's life, with rollback flags |
| Open recall campaigns | Title brands (salvage, flood, rebuilt, lemon law buyback) |
| Vehicle type, GVWR | Ownership timeline and how many hands the car has passed through |
| Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers | |
| Lien and finance status | |
| Auction photos from past resale points |
Discontinued US passenger-brand context: extra due diligence matters
Isuzu Motors America ceased selling passenger vehicles in the US market in January 2009, ending decades of US passenger SUV and pickup sales. Isuzu Commercial Truck of America continues to operate in the US, selling and servicing Isuzu N-Series and F-Series commercial trucks. However, no Isuzu passenger SUVs, pickups, or crossovers have been sold in the US market since the 2009 model year (final models: Ascender, i-Series, Axiom).
Title and salvage history. Discontinued-market vehicles disproportionately appear in salvage auctions, parts-only sales, and rebuilt-title resales. A Zilocar report flags title brands across all reporting states.
Open recall completion, especially Oasis NADI Takata. The Isuzu Oasis is one of the few non-Honda vehicles on NHTSA's NADI (Non-Azide Driver Inflator) Takata airbag list — a particularly serious subset of Takata coverage tied to higher-risk inflator behavior.
Parts availability and service. Honda dealers can service Oasis vehicles since the Oasis was a rebadged Honda Odyssey. GM dealers can support Ascender (rebadged Chevrolet TrailBlazer / GMC Envoy). Mechanical parts for Rodeo and Trooper are increasingly difficult to source, though aftermarket support remains.

What the free decode does not show
A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:
- Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
- Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
- Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
- Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
- Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
- Lien and finance records
- Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points
NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025. While Isuzu passenger vehicles do not rank among the most-stolen US models, older discontinued-market vehicles are more frequently exposed to salvage rebuild and auction pathway pricing. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Isuzu VIN
An Isuzu VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. JAA and JAC mark Japan-built Isuzu vehicles from Isuzu Motors Limited plants (Trooper, Rodeo Japan-built variants, VehiCROSS, Axiom). 4S2 marks a US-built Isuzu from Subaru-Isuzu Automotive (SIA) in Lafayette, Indiana — a joint venture that built the US-market Rodeo, Trooper, Vehicross, and Axiom. Some later Ascender models (2003–2008) carry GM WMI prefixes because they were built at GM's Moraine, Ohio plant alongside the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. The Isuzu i-Series pickup (i-280, i-290, i-350, i-370) was a rebadged Chevrolet Colorado / GMC Canyon built at GM's Shreveport, Louisiana plant. The Isuzu Oasis (1996–1999) was a rebadged Honda Odyssey built at Honda's Alliston, Ontario plant. Position 11 is the plant code; position 10 is the model year. Because Isuzu Motors America exited the US passenger market, recall completion status is most reliably checked via the Isuzu Commercial Vehicle Recalls page for any vehicles that fall under continuing service support.
The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents.
Isuzu NADI Takata airbag and major historical recall campaigns
Isuzu Oasis (1996–1999) NADI Takata airbag coverage: The Isuzu Oasis was a rebadged Honda Odyssey (first-generation) and appears on NHTSA's NADI (Non-Azide Driver Inflator) Takata airbag recall list alongside 1996–2000 Honda Civic Coupe, 1997–2001 Honda CR-V, 1998–2000 Honda Accord, 1998–2001 Honda Odyssey, 1998–2003 Acura 3.5RL, and various other Honda Group vehicles. NADI inflators are a high-risk subset of Takata coverage. Per NHTSA's Takata Recall Spotlight, certain vehicles received DO NOT DRIVE warnings due to the elevated rupture risk. Used Oasis owners should treat any open Oasis NADI Takata recall as immediate.
Ascender (2003–2008) GM 360 platform shared with Chevrolet TrailBlazer: The Isuzu Ascender is a rebadged Chevrolet TrailBlazer / GMC Envoy / Buick Rainier / Saab 9-7X built at GM Moraine, Ohio. Used Ascender vehicles are covered under multiple GM recall actions affecting the entire 360 platform family, including airbag wiring and electrical issues.
i-Series pickups (2006–2008) Chevrolet Colorado platform: The Isuzu i-280, i-290, i-350, and i-370 pickups are rebadged Chevrolet Colorado / GMC Canyon and are covered under GM Colorado/Canyon recall actions from those model years.
Rodeo and Trooper rollover litigation history: The Isuzu Trooper and earlier Rodeo had significant rollover stability litigation in the 1990s and 2000s, with Consumer Reports notably rating the 1995–1996 Trooper poorly for stability. Used Trooper and older Rodeo buyers should be aware of this context, though formal NHTSA recalls relate to specific component failures rather than stability per se.
Rodeo Sport / Honda Passport shared platform: Earlier Isuzu Rodeo and Honda Passport vehicles shared the Subaru-Isuzu Automotive (SIA) Lafayette platform, with shared recall campaigns covering some model years.
Where to get repairs: Isuzu Oasis recall repairs can typically be completed at Honda dealers. Ascender and i-Series recall repairs can be completed at GM dealers (Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac). Older Trooper, Rodeo, and Axiom recalls may have limited remediation options given the brand's market exit.

Common used-Isuzu buyer issues
Trooper transmission concerns: Earlier Isuzu Trooper models (1990s) had documented automatic transmission reliability concerns, particularly the 4L30E variant.
Rodeo / Amigo frame corrosion: The body-on-frame construction of Rodeo and Amigo vehicles in salt-belt states has notable frame corrosion patterns; verify frame condition carefully on used vehicles.
Subaru-Isuzu Automotive (SIA) Lafayette plant history: The Lafayette, Indiana joint venture between Subaru and Isuzu built Subaru Legacy and Outback alongside Isuzu Rodeo, Trooper, VehiCROSS, and Axiom. SIA became Subaru of Indiana Automotive in 2002 when Isuzu's stake was bought out. Used Isuzu vehicles from this plant share mechanical traits with Subaru-era SIA Subarus.
Joe Isuzu era marketing legacy: Isuzu's distinctive 1980s and 1990s US marketing built strong brand recognition among older buyers. Used Isuzu pricing tends to be lower than comparable Honda or Toyota equivalents because of the discontinuation, often making them a value buy despite limited parts support.

Oasis owners should also check Honda's recall lookup since the Oasis was a Honda Odyssey rebadge. A full Zilocar vehicle history report covers what NHTSA and the manufacturer search do not: accident records, title brands, odometer readings, ownership timeline, and auction history.
"Very thorough reports, which have helped me IMMENSELY in my used-car buying journey. Believe me, I dodged more than one bullet in buying severely-flawed vehicles that looked great from the outside, but these reports told a very different story." — Zilocar customer review
