Your Mitsubishi VIN, decoded

What you just saw, and what's still hidden

NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Mitsubishi is. It does not tell you what it has been through. Used-Mitsubishi buyers should specifically verify the 2025 Outlander rearview camera recall (Mitsubishi SR-25-001, covering approximately 200,000 vehicles), the 2026 expansion of the Outlander liftgate gas spring recall (SR-26-001, adding 108,046 more vehicles), and the older 2022 Outlander seat belt and rearview camera campaigns.

Active recalls across the Mitsubishi lineup

Across the Mitsubishi lineup, NHTSA recall data aggregated by Zilocar shows the Outlander and Outlander PHEV dominate active 2025–2026 campaigns. NHTSA Campaign 25V-369 (Mitsubishi SR-25-001) replaced and expanded the earlier 23V-345 (SR-23-001) recall to cover approximately 200,000 2022–2024 Outlander and 2023–2025 Outlander PHEV vehicles for rearview camera software. The April 2026 expansion (SR-26-001) added 108,046 more Outlander and Outlander PHEV vehicles to the liftgate gas spring recall, this time covering vehicles outside the salt-belt region.

What the free decode does not show

A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:

  • Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
  • Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
  • Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
  • Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
  • Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
  • Lien and finance records
  • Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points

NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025, and stolen vehicles regularly resurface on the used market with reissued titles. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Mitsubishi VIN

A Mitsubishi VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. JA3 marks a Japan-built Mitsubishi passenger car (Lancer historical, Mirage). JA4 marks a Japan-built Mitsubishi SUV (Outlander, Outlander Sport, Eclipse Cross). ML3 and ML0 mark Thailand-built Mitsubishi vehicles (Mirage, some Outlander Sport). The current Outlander (third generation, 2022 onward) shares the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance CMF-CD platform with the Nissan Rogue and is built primarily at the Okazaki plant in Japan. Position 10 is the model year code; position 11 is the plant. For VIN-specific recall completion status direct from the manufacturer, the Mitsubishi Open Recalls Lookup is the manufacturer source.

The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents. The Mitsubishi Connect mobile app and the SmartPhone-Link Display Audio infotainment system also display it.

Recent Mitsubishi recall campaigns to verify

NHTSA Campaign 25V-369, Outlander A-IVI rearview camera (Mitsubishi code SR-25-001, June 2025): Covers approximately 200,000 2022–2024 Outlander and 2023–2025 Outlander PHEV vehicles. A software error in the Bosch-supplied in-vehicle infotainment (A-IVI) system can cause the rearview camera image to freeze or fail to display when reversing, violating FMVSS 111. This recall replaces and expands NHTSA recall 23V-345 (SR-23-001). Vehicles previously repaired under 23V-345 need the new remedy. Affected vehicles were built at the Okazaki plant from September 27, 2022 through April 21, 2025. Mitsubishi began investigating in May 2023 after 358 warranty claims and 6 field reports. Dealers update the A-IVI software via OBD-II port at no charge. Owner letters mailed June 30, 2025.

NHTSA Campaign Outlander liftgate gas springs (Mitsubishi code SR-25-002, October 2025): Covers Outlander and Outlander PHEV vehicles with potential liftgate gas spring cylinder issues. Initial August 2025 recall covered approximately 90,000 vehicles in the salt-belt region.

NHTSA Campaign Outlander liftgate gas springs expansion (Mitsubishi code SR-26-001, April 20, 2026): Adds 108,046 vehicles to the recall: 102,815 Outlanders manufactured 2014–2020 and 5,231 Outlander PHEV manufactured 2018–2022. Saltwater could penetrate the dust cap of the liftgate gas spring, causing corrosion that can result in cylinder rupture or the liftgate falling unexpectedly. The expansion covers vehicles outside the original salt-belt region. NHTSA estimates 1% of the 108,046 recalled vehicles have the defect. Mitsubishi replaces left and right liftgate gas springs free of charge. Notification letters mailed by June 17, 2026.

Older 2022 Outlander recalls: NHTSA records show several 2022 Outlander recalls including SR-22-002 (right front, second-row right, and second-row left seat belt automatic locking retractors, FMVSS 208), SR-22-003 (2022 Outlander rearview camera software, replaced by 25V-369), and an Outlander Sport transmission control module software recall (August 2022).

Common Mitsubishi issues used-car buyers should verify

Solterra back-over and related shared platforms: The current Outlander shares the CMF-CD platform with the Nissan Rogue, and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance also produces shared components used across multiple brand recalls. A used-Mitsubishi buyer should verify whether shared-platform recalls apply.

Discontinued models (Mirage, Eclipse Cross): Mitsubishi discontinued both Mirage models after the 2024 model year. Used Mirage buyers should verify all open recalls before purchase, since dealer support for discontinued models can be inconsistent.

Older Takata airbag remedy: Mitsubishi vehicles built 2004–2017 may be part of the broader Takata airbag campaign, one of the largest recall actions in US automotive history per NHTSA's Takata Recall Spotlight. Older Lancer, Outlander, Outlander Sport, and Galant models should be checked for Takata remedy completion.
