Your Lincoln VIN, decoded

What you just saw, and what's still hidden

NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Lincoln is. It does not tell you what it has been through. Used-Lincoln buyers should specifically verify the March 2026 Image Processing Module A software recall (Ford code 26S21, 254,640 SUVs including Navigator, Nautilus, Aviator, Explorer), the Electronic Brake Booster recall (Ford code 25SD4, 2025 Navigator and Ford F-150/Expedition/Bronco/Ranger), the body control module recall (Ford code 25C42), and the LED Driver Modules recall (Ford code 25C39 covering Nautilus, Mustang Mach-E, Mustang).

Active recalls across the Lincoln lineup

Across the Lincoln lineup, NHTSA recall data aggregated by Zilocar shows the Navigator, Nautilus, Aviator, and Corsair lead in active 2025–2026 campaigns. The March 2026 Image Processing Module A (IPMA) software recall (Ford code 26S21) is the single largest current Lincoln-affecting action, covering 254,640 vehicles total across Lincoln Navigator, Nautilus, Aviator, and the related Ford Explorer. Ford has been the most-recalled automaker by total vehicle count in recent years, and Lincoln inherits many of those campaigns through shared platforms.

What the free decode does not show

A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:

  • Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
  • Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
  • Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
  • Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
  • Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
  • Lien and finance records
  • Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points

NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025, and full-size luxury Lincoln SUVs like the Navigator rank among targeted theft models in some metro areas. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Lincoln VIN

A Lincoln VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. 5LM marks a US-built Lincoln SUV from Ford plants — Wayne, Michigan (Navigator historical), Chicago Assembly Plant (Aviator), Louisville Assembly Plant Kentucky (Navigator current generation), or Oakville Assembly Ontario (Nautilus current generation). 1LN marks a US-built Lincoln passenger car (MKZ historical, Continental historical). 3LN marks a Mexico-built Lincoln (older MKZ from Hermosillo). Position 11 is the plant code; position 10 is the model year (P=2023, R=2024, S=2025). For VIN-specific recall completion status direct from Lincoln, the Lincoln Owner Support Recalls page is the manufacturer source.

The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents. The Lincoln Way mobile app and SYNC infotainment system also display it.
