What a license plate lookup tells you

A plate lookup is faster than a VIN check when you only have the plate visible — common situations include reviewing a used-car listing, documenting a hit-and-run, verifying a vehicle in your driveway, or cross-checking a seller's claims against the actual VIN.

Every plate lookup returns:

  • Vehicle identification: year, make, model, trim, body style, engine, transmission, drivetrain
  • The matched VIN: the full 17-character VIN tied to that plate
  • Accident history: reported collisions with severity, damage location, and dates
  • Title status: clean, salvage, rebuilt, flood-damaged, lemon-law buyback, or other branded titles
  • Odometer records: mileage readings reported across the vehicle's life, with rollback flags
  • Lien & finance status: whether a lender currently holds an interest in the vehicle
  • Recall campaigns: open and historical safety recalls from NHTSA
  • Theft records: cross-reference against NICB member-insurer data (659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025)
  • Auction history: prior auction appearances with photos where available

How a plate lookup works

Step 1 — Enter the plate and select the state. Type the plate exactly as it appears, including any letters, numbers, or hyphens. Selecting the correct issuing state is critical because plate formats overlap across states.

Step 2 — Review the free preliminary result. You'll see the vehicle's year, make, model, body style, and matched VIN at no cost.

Step 3 — Run the full report. For accident history, title brands, odometer records, ownership timeline, recalls, theft cross-references, and auction history, generate the complete Zilocar vehicle history report.

The whole process takes under 60 seconds. No DMV visit, no phone calls, no paperwork.

DPPA — what a plate lookup can and can't legally show

The federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) restricts how license plate data can be used and disclosed. A Zilocar plate lookup returns vehicle information only — never the registered owner's name, home address, phone number, driver's license number, or other personally identifying information.

What you legally see from a plate lookup:

  • Vehicle make, model, year, trim, body style
  • VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
  • Accident records (anonymized — no names attached)
  • Title status and brands
  • Odometer records
  • Theft and salvage records from insurer data
  • Recall campaigns

What you can't get from a public plate lookup:

  • The current owner's name or contact information
  • The owner's home address
  • Insurance policy details
  • The owner's driver's license number

If you need owner identification for a permitted DPPA purpose — such as a hit-and-run investigation by law enforcement, a process server with a court order, or an authorized insurance investigation , that information must be requested through the issuing state's DMV with proper DPPA-qualifying documentation. Zilocar does not facilitate owner-identification lookups, and any service that claims to do so without DPPA documentation is operating outside the law.

Plate lookup vs VIN check , when to use which

Both tools draw from the same Zilocar database with the same 70+ data sources including NHTSA and NICB. The choice depends on which identifier you have on hand.

SituationUse plate lookupUse VIN check
You have the plate, no VIN
You have the 17-character VIN
Vehicle is photographed but plate is partially obscured✓ (with VIN)
Used car listing shows plate but hides VIN
Pre-purchase inspection of a vehicle you're considering✓ (either works)
Vehicle has no plate (project car, auction find)
Hit-and-run or parking incident documentation
Verifying a seller's claims before requesting the VIN

When you have both, the VIN check tends to be slightly faster because the system doesn't need to cross-reference the plate-to-VIN mapping. But for most consumer use cases, plate lookup is just as fast.

Common reasons people run a plate lookup

Used car shopping. Sellers often post photos showing the plate but obscure the VIN. A plate lookup confirms the year/make/model the seller claims and previews title and accident history before you commit to a test drive.

Hit-and-run or parking lot incidents. If someone hits your car and leaves the scene, the plate is often the only identifier you have. Insurance and law enforcement use plate-based records to track vehicles involved in incidents.

Suspicious vehicles in your neighborhood. A vehicle that's been parked on your street for weeks with no movement, or a vehicle showing up repeatedly at unusual hours, can be looked up to verify it's not stolen or associated with insurance fraud claims.

Verifying a vehicle's identity before service or storage. Auto-body shops, valet services, parking facilities, and storage operations sometimes need to confirm a vehicle's identity before accepting it on their lot.

Professional use cases. Real estate agents, fleet managers, insurance investigators, repossession agents, and legal process servers all use plate lookups for permitted DPPA purposes.

The report gave some additional information that CarFax did not show, and from that I was able to make a more informed decision on the purchase of a used Corvette that I was looking into.
