Your Jaguar VIN, decoded
What you just saw, and what's still hidden
NHTSA's free decode confirms what the Jaguar is. It does not tell you what it has been through. Used-Jaguar buyers should specifically verify the I-PACE battery overheat recall (a five-campaign stack across 2023–2026 leading to vehicle repurchase for some), F-Pace gear shift module moisture, and E-Pace passenger airbag tear status.
| What NHTSA showed you | What the full Zilocar report adds |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer, plant, year, body class | Every reported accident with severity and damage area |
| Engine, drivetrain, fuel type | Odometer readings across the vehicle's life, with rollback flags |
| Open recall campaigns | Title brands (salvage, flood, rebuilt, lemon law buyback) |
| Vehicle type, GVWR | Ownership timeline and how many hands the car has passed through |
| Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers | |
| Lien and finance status | |
| Auction photos from past resale points |
Active recalls across the Jaguar lineup
Across the Jaguar lineup, NHTSA recall data aggregated by Zilocar shows the I-PACE leads active campaigns by a wide margin. The 2019–2020 I-PACE high-voltage battery overheat recall has stacked four times (NHTSA Campaigns 23V-369, 23V-709, 24V-085, and the February 2026 supersession via 26V-067/H570/H571/H572), with Jaguar repurchasing certain 2019 I-PACE vehicles where interim repairs were inadequate. The E-Pace passenger airbag tear recall (Jaguar code H552) covers 2021–2024 E-Pace vehicles, and the F-Pace shares the December 2025 gear shift module moisture recall with several Land Rover models.

What the free decode does not show
A free NHTSA decode returns factory data and open recalls. It does not include:
- Accident records from state agencies and insurance carriers
- Title brands beyond what NHTSA flags (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback, rebuilt)
- Odometer rollback detection across the vehicle's full reporting history
- Ownership timeline and how many hands the vehicle has passed through
- Theft records from NICB member insurance carriers
- Lien and finance records
- Auction photos showing the vehicle's condition at past resale points
NICB reports 659,880 vehicles were stolen in the US in 2025, and luxury cars including the Jaguar F-Pace and I-PACE rank among higher-value targets in some metro areas. NICB's free VINCheck flags only theft and salvage from member insurers; it does not show accident history or odometer detail. A Zilocar vehicle history report layers state DMV title data, NICB salvage and theft records, NHTSA recall data, insurance carrier accident reports, and auction sales history into one document.

How to read your Jaguar VIN
A Jaguar VIN has 17 characters following ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. SAJ is the primary WMI for Jaguar passenger cars built in the UK (XE, XF, XJ, F-Type, F-Pace, E-Pace from Castle Bromwich, Solihull, and Halewood plants). SAD is associated with the XJ historically. SAL marks some Jaguar Land Rover SUV production. Recent Jaguar production has consolidated as the brand transitions to electric models. The I-PACE was built by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria — a notable plant detail since US-market I-PACEs carry an Austrian WMI not normally associated with British luxury cars. Position 10 is the model year code; position 11 is the plant. For VIN-specific recall completion status direct from JLR, the Jaguar official recall lookup is the manufacturer source.
The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, the title, registration, and insurance documents. The Jaguar Remote app and InControl Touch Pro infotainment system also display it.
Recent Jaguar recall campaigns to verify
I-PACE high-voltage battery overheat (Jaguar codes H441/H459/H471/H514/H529/H536/H570/H571/H572, 2023–2026): Covers 2019–2020 Jaguar I-PACE vehicles. The high-voltage battery may overheat and create a fire risk. The recall has expanded across multiple campaigns: NHTSA 23V-369 (H441), 23V-709 (H459), 24V-085 (H471), 24V-633 (H514/H536), and the 2026 superseding campaign (H570/H571/H572). Owners are advised to park and charge outside and away from structures, and to limit charging to 80% (some campaigns) or 90% (later interim) until the final remedy is complete. For certain 2019 I-PACE vehicles, Jaguar is repurchasing the vehicles under recall 24V-633. Vehicles previously repaired under earlier recall numbers need the new remedy.
NHTSA Campaign December 2025, F-Pace gear shift module moisture (JLR codes D054 and H566): Covers 2025 Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Discovery Sport, 2026 Range Rover Evoque, plus 2025 Jaguar F-Pace vehicles. Moisture entering the gear shift module during assembly can cause the gear shift position indicator light to fail (FMVSS 101 noncompliance). Dealers replace the GSM at no cost. Owner letters mailed December 2, 2025.
NHTSA Campaign E-Pace passenger airbag tear (Jaguar code H552, February 2026): Covers 2021–2024 Jaguar E-Pace vehicles where the passenger airbag may tear during deployment, failing to adequately protect the occupant and allowing hot gases to escape. Dealers replace the passenger airbag module at no cost. Owner letters mailed February 6, 2026.

Common Jaguar issues used-car buyers should verify
XE turn signal reminder (2019–2020, Jaguar XE): A smaller recall covered 2019–2020 Jaguar XE vehicles for turn signal-related issues affecting visual and audible turn signal reminders when a front turn signal indicator stops working.
Used Jaguar pre-purchase considerations: Jaguars have higher-than-average repair costs and parts pricing typical of British luxury cars. Used Jaguar buyers should verify any accident history closely — body and electrical repair costs are substantial and prior damage may not be obvious from a visual inspection. The Zilocar report's accident records and auction photos are particularly valuable for used-Jaguar due diligence.
Older Takata airbag considerations: Jaguar vehicles built 2002–2015 may be part of the broader Takata airbag campaign, one of the largest recall actions in US automotive history per NHTSA's Takata Recall Spotlight. Verify Takata remedy completion on older Jaguar models.
Free vs. paid Jaguar VIN check options
| Tool | Best for | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| NHTSA vPIC | Manufacturer + plant + basic specs | ~15 standard fields, no auth required |
| Jaguar official recall lookup | Most current recall completion status | JLR manufacturer recall list, 15-year history coverage |
| Zilocar vehicle history report | Complete history before you buy | Accidents, title, odometer, owners, recalls, theft, auction photos |
The NHTSA decode at the top of this page is free and returns the official manufacturer-filed Jaguar VIN data. For the most current Jaguar-specific recall completion status, the Jaguar official recall lookup is the JLR manufacturer source. A full Zilocar vehicle history report covers what NHTSA and the manufacturer's recall search do not: accident records, title brands, odometer readings, ownership timeline, and auction history (especially valuable for used-Jaguar due diligence given high repair costs).
"Very thorough reports, which have helped me IMMENSELY in my used-car buying journey. Believe me, I dodged more than one bullet in buying severely-flawed vehicles that looked great from the outside, but these reports told a very different story." — Zilocar customer review
