Verify any boat's history by VIN/HIN. The lookup returns the boat's manufacturer specifications, title status, any damage or theft records, and (where applicable) ownership history.

There are approximately 11.7 million registered recreational vessels in the US. Used-boat buying carries similar risks to used-car buying — title fraud, theft, undisclosed damage — plus risks unique to boats that conventional VIN check tools don't always cover.
A Boat VIN Lookup by VIN/HIN reveals:
Boats use a Hull Identification Number (HIN), not a VIN. HINs have been required by federal law since 1972 for recreational vessels and follow a 12-character format (different from a car's 17-character VIN). The first 3 characters are the Manufacturer Identification Code (MIC), assigned by the Coast Guard.
For matching-numbers verification on collectible boats — especially vintage motorcycles, classic boats, and restoration-grade vehicles — checking that the VIN/HIN on the frame matches the VIN/HIN on the engine and the title is essential to value verification.
HIN format differs from VIN. A standard automotive VIN decoder will not work on a boat HIN. The HIN format encodes the manufacturer (3-character MIC), production sequence (5 characters), and model year/certification date (4 characters). Coast Guard MIC lookup is the authoritative source for the first 3 characters.
State titling vs Coast Guard documentation. Boats can be state-titled (most common for vessels under 26 feet), federally documented through the Coast Guard (more common for larger vessels), or both. This creates parallel record systems that don't always synchronize.
HIN tampering or replacement. Easier than VIN tampering because the HIN is fiberglass-embossed or plated on the hull. Some boats have had hulls swapped or HIN plates moved. The federally-required hidden secondary HIN (since 1984) is designed to defeat exactly this fraud — but knowing where to find it requires manufacturer-specific knowledge.
Pre-1972 vessels. Boats manufactured before the federal HIN requirement may have no HIN at all, or non-standard manufacturer serial numbers. These are extremely difficult to verify and require physical inspection and matching-numbers verification.
Storm and freshwater/saltwater history. Boats damaged in hurricanes, especially in Florida and the Gulf, sometimes resurface in inland markets without proper damage disclosure. Saltwater exposure causes specific corrosion patterns that affect resale value significantly.
Stolen boats and PWC. The NICB does track stolen boats, but recovery rates are notably lower than for cars. Personal watercraft (Jet Ski, Sea-Doo, WaveRunner) are stolen at very high rates per registered unit.
Step 1 , Find the VIN/HIN. Use the locations above to identify the VIN/HIN on the boat. Verify the VIN/HIN on the boat matches the VIN/HIN on the title and registration.
Step 2 , Enter the VIN/HIN above. The preliminary check returns the boat's manufacturer specifications and any indicators of title brands, theft history, or significant events.
Step 3 , Run the full report. The full Zilocar report shows the complete available history , title brands, accidents or damage, theft records, ownership timeline, recalls, and auction history with photos where available.
Step 4 , Physical inspection. A VIN/HIN check is the starting point. A physical inspection by a mechanic experienced with boats , and a sea-trial for boats , is the essential next step before any purchase.
Zilocar covers boats from major manufacturers including:
Sea Ray, Boston Whaler, Bayliner, Ranger, Bass Pro Tracker, Yamaha, Sea-Doo, Mastercraft, Malibu, Chaparral, Grady-White, Beneteau
Coverage extends to most major manufacturers; less common or specialty brands may have reduced data depth. For specialty or vintage boats, the report shows whatever records are available with clear coverage notes.
Boats aren't subject to Monroney label requirements. Manufacturer specification sheets and dealer pricing documents serve a similar purpose. The Coast Guard does require a capacity plate on most vessels showing maximum persons and engine HP.
State titling rules for boats vary much more than for cars. Some states issue full titles for boats, some issue registration-only documents, and some don't require any state document at all. This means:
The Zilocar report cross-references all available sources and clearly marks which data points are confirmed vs unconfirmed for the specific boat category.
