How often does a car actually catch fire while parked and off?

About one time in seven, among fire complaints. Of the 51,587 fire-flagged vehicle complaints in NHTSA's file, 7,269 narratives describe a fire that started while the vehicle was parked with the engine off — 14.09%.

That number needs one guardrail stated immediately: it is a share of complaints, not a rate per vehicle. NHTSA's complaint file records what people reported. It contains no count of how many cars sat parked overnight without incident, so nothing here tells you the probability that a given car will burn. What it does tell you is the composition of vehicle fires that reach the federal record — and the fact that a seventh of them happen with the key out is the part most buyers get wrong.

Are newer cars really more likely to burn while parked?

Partly. The recent rise is real, but it is not unprecedented, and the honest version of this finding is more interesting than the headline version.

Here is the parked-and-off share of fire complaints by model year, with the normalised measure that only counts complaints which actually stated a vehicle state:

The shape is a U, not a ramp. Parked fires peaked with model year 2000, collapsed through the 2010s, and have been climbing again since model year 2018. Model year 2022 sits at roughly two-and-a-half times the MY2018 trough — but still well below MY2000.

We ran the check most likely to kill this finding

The obvious way this result could be an artefact: complaint narratives have got longer and more detailed over 30 years. If newer complaints simply describe the situation more often, the parked share would rise without any change in what is actually burning.

That effect is real. The share of fire complaints that state any vehicle state climbs from 33.6% (MY1995) to about 55-61% in recent model years. So part of the raw rise is a writing-style artefact, and anyone reporting the raw number alone would be overstating the trend.

The finding survives the correction. Restricting to complaints that stated a vehicle state, the parked share still falls to 13.9% at MY2018 and still rises to 32.0% at MY2022 — a 2.3x increase that descriptiveness cannot explain. And MY2000 remains the peak at 50.1% on the same corrected measure.

So both halves hold, and they point in opposite directions from the usual framing: parked fires are genuinely rising again in recent model years, and the worst model year on record is still a car from the year 2000.

What made model year 2000 the worst on record?

One defect family, in one manufacturer's vehicles. Of the roughly 1,282 parked-and-off fire complaints across model years 2000 and 2001, 788 are Ford vehicles. The leading component categories are electrical system (425) and vehicle speed control (295).

That is the Ford speed control deactivation switch — a brake-mounted cruise-control switch that was wired to a circuit carrying power at all times, whether or not the key was in the ignition. When a seal failed and brake fluid leaked into the switch, it could overheat and ignite with the car parked, unattended and switched off. Ford recalled roughly 14.9 million vehicles across six campaigns between 1999 and 2009.

It is the cleanest illustration of the mechanism behind every park-outside recall: a circuit that stays live after the key comes out. That is also why vehicle speed control tops the concentration table below.

Read the last column, not the first. Electrical system has the most parked fires simply because it has the most fire complaints of any category. Vehicle speed control is the outlier: more than a third of its fire complaints involve a car that was switched off, roughly double the electrical-system rate.

Which brands show the highest parked-fire share?

Lincoln, Mini and Ford lead across all model years. This table needs the heaviest caveat on the page, so it comes first: these are shares of each brand's own fire complaints, not fires per vehicle sold. The complaint file has no sales denominator. A brand ranks high here if it had a defect that burned parked cars — not necessarily if it burns more often overall.

Lincoln, Ford and Mercury are the same corporate family and the same switch. Their position in this table is substantially a 1990s-2000s defect still sitting in a 30-year file, not a statement about vehicles on sale now.

Tesla ranks lowest of any brand clearing the threshold, at 3.8%. That cuts against the popular association between EVs and parked fires, but it is a small sample (210 fire complaints) and Tesla's fire complaints skew heavily to recent years, so it is a weak signal rather than a finding.

Restricting to model years 2019-2025 changes the leaderboard entirely — and these counts are small enough that they should be read as a watch list, not a ranking:

What can a VIN check tell you — and what can't it?

It can tell you whether the specific car falls under an open recall campaign and how many recalls it carries; whether it has accident and damage records, including airbag deployment; whether it appears in salvage or junk auction records; its odometer readings and any rollback indication; theft records; ownership history; sales-listing history; specs, NHTSA and IIHS ratings, and valuation.

It cannot tell you whether a recall was actually repaired — remedy and "flashed" status is not in vehicle history data. It cannot tell you whether NHTSA has an open investigation (a PE or EA) on that platform, because investigations attach to vehicle populations, not VINs. It cannot show per-unit firmware or software version. And it cannot make a legal title-brand determination.

For a fire recall specifically, the split matters more than usual. A history report tells you the campaign exists on that VIN. Only the free VIN lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls or a franchise dealer can tell you whether the repair was done — and with a park-outside recall, an unrepaired car is one you are being told not to park in a garage.

Practical order for a used car with a fire recall in its history: check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls for open campaigns and remedy status, pull a history report for prior fire or flood damage and auction records that suggest the car already burned once, and ask the seller for the dealer repair order that closes the campaign.

Method

Source file. NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation consumer complaints flat file, FLAT_CMPL.txt, downloaded from https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/ffdd/cmpl/FLAT_CMPL.zip on 2026-08-24. The file contained 2,237,560 records.

Universe. Restricted to records with product type V (vehicles), excluding tires, child seats and equipment: 2,165,535 records. Model year was then restricted to 1990-2027, dropping the sentinel values 9999 and 0000 and blank years, leaving 2,120,294 complaints. Of those, 51,587 carry NHTSA's fire flag (field 9 = Y). That 51,587 is the denominator for every percentage on this page unless stated otherwise.

Classification. Each fire complaint's free-text narrative (field 20) was classified into exactly one state at fire onset:

  1. No event — the narrative describes no actual fire, only a recall notice or a fear of fire. Requires an explicit event phrase ("caught fire", "burst into flames", "fire department") to escape this bucket. 16,491 records.
  2. Driving or reaction — the fire began in motion, or the driver pulled over because of it. This was the dominant false positive in early drafts: a driver smells smoke, pulls into a parking lot, and the narrative then contains the word "parked". Vetoed on phrases like "pulled over", "pulled into", "came to a stop", "while driving", "off ramp". 14,037 records.
  3. Running, idling or being started — parked but energised, including remote starts and warm-ups. 1,728 records.
  4. Charging — parked but energised via a charger. 226 records.
  5. Parked and shut off — the load-bearing category. 7,269 records.
  6. Other — a fire occurred but no vehicle state is recoverable. 11,836 records.

Cleanup rules. "Parking lot", "parking garage", "parking brake" and "in park" (the gear selector) are stripped before testing, because they are not evidence the engine was off. A bare time gap ("36 minutes later the car was on fire") is not accepted as off-state evidence unless it is tied to parking language within 90 characters. Running/idling and driving/reaction vetoes take priority over parked evidence, so "caught fire while parked and idling" is classified as running, not parked.

Validation. The matcher is pinned by a 39-case test suite (20 must-match, 19 must-not-match) built entirely from real narratives in this file. Three rounds of blind precision audits were run on random samples of matches; the final audit was 16 of 16 correct after fixing four defects found in earlier rounds — a misspelled "IDELING", "started it up", an equipment record with model year 9999, and a bare time-gap match with no parking evidence.

Robustness check. Because narrative descriptiveness rises over time, every model-year figure is reported twice: as a share of all fire complaints, and as a share of complaints that stated any vehicle state. The trend is reported only where it survives both.

Known limits. This is a complaint file, not an incident census — it counts reports, not fires, and recall publicity measurably increases reporting for the affected vehicles. There is no sales or fleet denominator, so no rate per vehicle can be computed and no brand comparison of actual fire risk is possible. The classifier is rule-based on free text and is imperfect in both directions: about 23% of fire complaints state no usable vehicle state and are excluded from the parked count, which means 7,269 is a floor, not a ceiling. Model years 2024-2026 are still accumulating complaints and their percentages are volatile on small counts. The file lists MERCEDES-BENZ and MERCEDES BENZ as separate makes; they are not merged here.
