Raw NHTSA complaint totals mostly rank best-sellers. We computed a sharper number: for each used model, what share of owner complaints actually report a crash or injury. Across 325,275 deduplicated MY2015-2022 complaints, 5.0% are severe. As filed, the 2015-2022 Toyota Corolla tops the ranking at 18.2% (279 of 1,530). But that result does not survive its own robustness check: 63.1% of those severe Corolla complaints cite airbags, and airbag complaints are crash-linked almost by definition. Remove them and the Corolla falls to 5th while the Tesla Model X leads at 13.0%. We publish both cuts. These are unverified owner reports, model-level, not proof about any one car.

By raw count of severe complaints, the leaders are the country's best-selling trucks and SUVs. The Ram 1500 records 469 severe complaints, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 380, and the Ford F-150 363. That ranking is real but largely mechanical: more cars on the road means more complaints of every kind, so a raw count mostly re-ranks sales charts. This is the same reason do owner complaints predict a car recall is a harder question than a raw tally suggests — volume dominates the signal.

Which used model has the highest share of complaints tied to a crash or injury?

The severity-share ranking puts entirely different models on top: small cars, hybrids and Teslas rather than full-size trucks. Among high-volume models (≥500 complaints), the Toyota Corolla leads at 18.2% as filed — nearly one in five owner complaints reports a crash or injury — followed by the Toyota Prius (14.5%), Tesla Model X (13.8%), Nissan Versa (13.7%) and Tesla Model S (12.7%).

The right-hand columns are the ones to read carefully. They show how much of each model's severity rests on airbag complaints, and what the share becomes once those are removed.

Labels are counted exactly as NHTSA spells them. Merging each nameplate's sub-variants leaves the top of this table unchanged — the Corolla family reads 291 of 1,602, still 18.2%. See Method.

The check that reverses the leader: airbag complaints

The single most important thing in this dataset is not which model is on top. It is that the metric partly measures airbag complaints, because an owner usually only discovers an airbag problem by crashing. In our data:

  • Complaints citing AIR BAGS are 4.9% of all MY2015-2022 complaints but 30.4% of all severe ones.
  • 31.6% of airbag complaints are severe, against 3.7% for every other complaint.

So any model that attracted a lot of airbag complaints — which for MY2015-2016 cars overwhelmingly means the Takata inflator recalls — inherits a high severity share automatically. Re-ranking with every airbag-citing complaint removed produces a different leaderboard:

The Tesla result is the one that survives both cuts. The four Teslas move barely at all (Model X 13.8% to 13.0%, Model S 12.7% to 12.2%) because only 6-12% of their severe complaints cite airbags. The Corolla, Versa, Camry, Forte and Outlander all roughly halve. If you want one durable sentence from this analysis, it is that Teslas lead on crash-linked complaint share and the lead does not depend on how airbags are handled.

Why do these models rank high?

For the Teslas, the severe complaints concentrate in VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (30.2% of the Model S's severe complaints) and SUSPENSION (28.5%), with FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE also present — consistent with the well-documented phantom-braking and unintended-acceleration report clusters, where a driver frequently describes a crash or near-crash.

For the Toyotas, the driver is different and it is worth stating plainly because the intuitive explanation is wrong. The Corolla's severe complaints are 63.1% airbag (176 of 279); VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL accounts for just 9.0% (25). The Camry is 49.3% airbag against 14.7% speed control. So the Toyota entries on the as-filed table are substantially a Takata-era airbag signal, not an unintended-acceleration signal. The model-year gradient says the same thing: the Corolla's severe share falls from 28.8% in MY2015 to 7.6% in MY2020, tracking Takata exposure rather than anything about newer cars.

Neither pattern establishes causation. Complaint data records what owners chose to report, and both clusters have attracted heavy publicity, which itself drives filings. The same dynamic shows up when used hybrid brake problems to check before buying and which used cars have the most brake failure complaints are counted.

Which models rank high on both lists?

Seven models clear both bars on the as-filed cut — at least 500 complaints and a severe share of 10.1% or more (2x baseline): Tesla Model S, Toyota Corolla, Tesla Model Y, Toyota Camry, Tesla Model X, Toyota Prius and Nissan Versa. Teslas hold three of the seven slots, and after the airbag check they hold the top four outright. On death-linked complaints specifically, the leaders are the Ram 1500 (12), Tesla Model 3 (11), Tesla Model S (10) and Tesla Model Y (8) — Teslas take three of the top four. These death figures are owner-reported and unverified.

By the numbers

Based on 325,275 deduplicated NHTSA ODI complaint records for model years 2015-2022, from FLAT_CMPL.txt, retrieved 2026-09-10. The frozen leaderboard is published as CSV (linked in Sources) and carries both cuts as columns. Crash, injury and death fields are self-reported and unverified.

A note on the threshold: the ranking also moves without a floor

The share ranking is sensitive to sample size, so we set a 500-complaint floor. At a permissive ≥50-complaint floor, tiny-volume models top the list and are statistically noisy — Mitsubishi Mirage 27.0% (n=74), Mercedes-Benz ML350 23.1% (n=52), Toyota Yaris 23.0% (n=74), Toyota Prius V 22.6% (n=53). We do not headline those spikes. Because ranking by raw count, by as-filed share and by airbag-excluded share each produce different leaders, we publish all three and assert no single "worst" model.

How does the recalled Jeep Grand Cherokee fit in?

The news peg is NHTSA recall 26V562, which covers 328,381 vehicles: 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, and 2022-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee 4xe. The defect: rear coil springs may be incorrectly installed and can detach while driving, raising crash risk. The remedy replaces the rear coil spring lower isolators free of charge; the report was received Sept 1, 2026, and interim notification letters are expected to mail Sept 29, 2026.

That recall covers 2021-2023 trucks. Our leaderboard cohort is the 2015-2022 Grand Cherokee, which shows a 9.2% severe-complaint share (380 of 4,139) — above baseline, the second-highest raw severe count in our data, and one of the entries that holds up under the airbag check at 7.7%. It is driven by a largely different, older population than the recalled units. The same week, Ford recalled about 159,000 vehicles across two campaigns (148,663 MY2024-2026 Mustangs for a ground-terminal fracture that can cause loss of drive power, plus 10,001 vehicles with the 2.3L EcoBoost for piston failure), and NHTSA opened an investigation (EA26004) into roughly 499,603 MY2015-2018 Ford Edge units with the 2.0L EcoBoost over coolant intrusion — an open investigation, not a recall.

What a VIN check can and can't tell you here

This leaderboard is population-level data keyed to make, model and year. It cannot tell you what happened to one specific car. That is the job of a per-VIN report — and it is important to be precise about what such a report can and cannot prove.

To check a specific car, start with NHTSA's free VIN recall lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls for open recalls and the current remedy status. Alongside it, a Zilocar VIN check surfaces recall presence plus the history NHTSA does not carry — accident and airbag-deployment records, salvage-auction and odometer checks, theft, ownership, and past and current sales listings with prices and mileage. Neither our complaint ranking nor a Zilocar report confirms a recall was remedied or tracks an open investigation; confirm those with the selling dealer and NHTSA.

Method

Source file. NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation Complaints flat file FLAT_CMPL.txt, extracted from FLAT_CMPL.zip. The archive was Last-Modified 2026-09-09 10:22 UTC and we downloaded and processed it on 2026-09-10. The file is tab-delimited, 51 fields, no header row. Freshness was asserted before computing anything: the newest filing date in the file is 2026-09-07, three days before the run, and the archive's CRC verified intact. This check exists because NHTSA re-published this same download on 2026-09-08 with roughly eight years of filings missing under a newer timestamp; that snapshot has since been restored, and a stale-but-parseable file is the failure mode to guard against, not a missing one.

Universe. 2,244,079 complaint-component rows in the file. We keep PROD_TYPE='V' (vehicles), which leaves 2,171,938 rows, restrict YEARTXT to 2015-2022 — the "modern used car" cohort — and deduplicate to distinct complaint ids (ODINO), because the file stores one row per cited component and a single owner report naming two systems appears twice. That gives N = 325,275 distinct complaints across 2,228 make/model labels. Every figure in this article is a count of distinct complaints, never of component rows, vehicles or owners.

Severity flag. A complaint is "severe" when CRASH='Y' OR INJURED>0 OR DEATHS>0. All three fields are entered by the complainant and are not verified by NHTSA. Fleet-wide, 16,416 complaints (5.05%) are severe, 13,748 (4.23%) report a crash, 8,547 report at least one injury and 218 report at least one death.

Aggregation. Make and model strings are trimmed and upper-cased and grouped as a make + model pair. Three rankings are published: raw severe count, severe share as filed with a 500-complaint floor, and severe share excluding airbag-citing complaints. The floor exists so that a nameplate with a few dozen complaints cannot top a share ranking on noise.

Check 1 — the airbag artifact, which REVERSES the leader. This is the check most likely to break the headline, and it does. An airbag complaint is close to definitionally crash-linked: most owners learn of an airbag problem by crashing. Measured here, complaints citing the top-level component AIR BAGS are 4.9% of all complaints but 30.4% of all severe complaints, and 31.6% of airbag complaints are severe against 3.7% of everything else. Re-ranking with every airbag-citing complaint removed moves the Toyota Corolla from 1st (18.2%) to 5th (8.5%) and puts the Tesla Model X first at 13.0%, with Teslas holding the top four. The Tesla entries barely move because only 6-12% of their severe complaints cite airbags; the Corolla, Nissan Versa (63.8% airbag), Toyota Camry (49.3%), Kia Forte (55.6%) and Mitsubishi Outlander (50.0%) roughly halve. Both cuts are published in the tables above and as columns in the frozen CSV. The component breakdown supports the same reading: 63.1% of the Corolla's severe complaints cite airbags while VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL accounts for 9.0%, and the Corolla's severe share falls monotonically from 28.8% in MY2015 to 7.6% in MY2020, which tracks Takata exposure rather than a property of the car.

Check 2 — label consolidation. NHTSA's MODELTXT is free text, so one nameplate can occupy several strings and a split label can flip a leaderboard. We swept every ranked nameplate for prefix-sharing variants and tested model-year overlap. The headline holds: merging COROLLA (1,530/279) with COROLLA CROSS (45/6), COROLLA IM (20/5), COROLLA HATCHBACK (5/0) and COROLLA HYBRID (2/1) gives 291 of 1,602 = 18.2%, unchanged. The Camry merged with CAMRY HYBRID reads 233 of 2,295 = 10.2%, also unchanged. The Prius family is the one entry that moves materially — merging PRIUS C, PRIUS V, PRIUS PRIME and PRIUS PLUG-IN HYBRID into PRIUS gives 116 of 714 = 16.2%, up from 14.5%, but it stays 2nd. Following the standing rule, variants with overlapping model years (Corolla Cross, Prius Prime, Camry Hybrid) are genuinely different vehicles and the tables keep them separate; the CSV lists every label exactly as NHTSA spells it, unmerged, so anyone can re-rank either way.

Check 3 — independent reproduction. Every published figure was recomputed from a second, independently downloaded copy of the archive before publication: 2,244,079 rows, 2,171,938 vehicle rows, 325,275 distinct complaints, 2,228 labels, 16,416 severe, 13,748 crash, 8,547 injury, 218 death, and both leaderboards reproduced to the digit.

Known limits. (1) NHTSA complaints are self-reported and unverified — they are not confirmed defects, crashes or deaths. (2) The file carries no sales or registration denominator, so nothing here is a per-vehicle crash rate; the share cut is each model's share of its own complaints. (3) The severity share is partly a measure of airbag-complaint exposure, which is what Check 1 quantifies. (4) Complaint volume and composition track how many cars were sold, how old they are, and how much publicity a defect cluster received. (5) The MY2015-2022 window is our editorial choice of used-car cohort; a different window reshuffles the ranks. (6) Counts are distinct complaints, not vehicles or owners. (7) Model-level only — nothing here describes an individual VIN.
