Key facts
- Recall: NHTSA Campaign No. 26V227 (manufacturer recall "UNW"), filed April 9, 2026.
- Vehicles: 440,830 Honda Odyssey, MY2018-2022 (5th generation), produced Jan 24, 2017 – Jun 3, 2022. Honda estimates ~0.1% carry the defect.
- Defect: The DENSO-supplied SRS ECU holds incorrect deployment parameters for the side and side-curtain airbags; strong road-impact forces (potholes, speed bumps, debris) can be misread as a side impact, causing airbags to deploy with no crash.
- Harm (as of April 2, 2026): 130 warranty claims, 25 injury reports, 0 deaths.
- Remedy: Free dealer reprogram or replacement of the SRS ECU. Dealer notification ~April 10, 2026; owner letters ~May 25, 2026.
- Separate July 2026 item: A defect petition (dated May 30, 2026; ODI evaluation opened ~July 14-16, 2026) covers 806,963 MY2011-2017 Odyssey vans. This is an investigation, not a recall, and is not VIN-mappable.
- Do not confuse with: the Odyssey rearview-camera recall 26V423 (325,588 MY2018-2020 vans).
Which Honda Odyssey years are actually affected by the airbag recall?
The airbag recall applies only to model-year 2018-2022 Odyssey minivans — the 5th-generation body. The much-shared "807,000 minivans" figure in July 2026 news refers to a different, older generation (MY2011-2017, 4th generation) and a different NHTSA action — a petition, not a recall. These are two separate vehicle populations. They share a similar allegation (airbags deploying without a sufficiently severe crash), but there is no confirmation they share an identical root cause, so treat them as distinct.
If the used van you are considering is a 2018 through 2022, recall 26V227 may apply and is checkable by VIN. If it is a 2011 through 2017, no VIN tool — including NHTSA's own — can tell you whether it is implicated in the ongoing petition, because petition and investigation scopes are not tied to individual VINs.
What is the defect, and have airbags gone off while driving?
The recall concerns inadvertent (non-crash) deployment of the side and side-curtain airbags. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) ECU, supplied by DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee, contains deployment parameters with insufficient threshold margin for the 2nd- and 3rd-row airbags. On rough roads, high-G signals from potholes, speed bumps, or debris can be misinterpreted as a side impact, firing the curtain and side airbags with no collision.
As of April 2, 2026, Honda reported 130 warranty claims and 25 injury reports, with zero deaths. The issue was first reported in November 2017; NHTSA opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25-018 on October 28, 2025, and Honda decided to recall on April 2, 2026. Consumer Reports notes Honda may have exceeded the 5-day reporting requirement, which could carry civil-penalty exposure — this is reported as alleged/potential, not a finalized penalty.
Is there a do-not-drive order, and what does the fix involve?
The remedy is a free dealer reprogram or replacement of the SRS ECU with corrected deployment parameters. Honda implemented the production fix at the start of MY2023 (June 3, 2022). Major coverage describes only this free software update, consistent with Honda's ~0.1% defect estimate; there is no confirmed do-not-drive or park-outside advisory, so we do not assert one. Confirm current guidance with a Honda dealer or NHTSA if you are unsure.
Affected vehicles and NHTSA actions at a glance
| Item | NHTSA action | Vehicles | Model years (generation) | Component | Status for a used buyer |

What a VIN check can and can't tell you here
A VIN check is genuinely useful for two things on a used Odyssey, and misleading if pushed beyond them. What it can do: confirm that recall 26V227 is present on a specific 2018-2022 van (the same recall-presence signal NHTSA's free tool provides), and surface accident and damage records that include airbag-deployment status. An example vehicle-history report lists an explicit "Airbags: Intact" field within damage detail — so a report can indicate whether a van's airbags previously fired (in a crash or, plausibly, inadvertently) if that event reached a police, insurance, or auction record. That lets you sanity-check a van whose curtain airbags may have gone off on a pothole.
What it cannot do: it cannot prove the recall was remedied (open-vs-closed / firmware-flash status lives only with Honda dealers and NHTSA's owner lookup); it cannot flag the July 2026 MY2011-2017 investigation (NHTSA petitions and PE/EA probes are not VIN-mappable); and it shows junk/salvage auction records, not the legal title-brand classification. Also note: an undocumented or quietly repaired deployment may not appear, so "Airbags: Intact" is reassuring but not a guarantee.
| What you want to know | VIN check | Where else to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Is recall 26V227 listed on this van? | Yes — recall presence/count | NHTSA VIN lookup (free) |
| Was the SRS ECU actually reprogrammed? | No | Honda dealer / NHTSA owner lookup |
| Did the airbags deploy before? | Sometimes — if in accident/damage/auction data | Seller disclosure, inspection |
| Is this 2011-2017 van in the July probe? | No | NHTSA ODI |
| Prior salvage/junk auction, odometer, theft, owners? | Yes | — |
How to check a used Odyssey by VIN, step by step
Start with NHTSA's free recall lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls — enter the VIN to see whether 26V227 (and 26V423) is open on that specific van. Because NHTSA's tool reflects remedy status, it is also the authoritative place to see whether the recall still shows as open. Next, ask the seller for proof of the SRS ECU update and have a Honda dealer verify it. For the fuller ownership and damage picture — including whether the airbags ever deployed — run a Zilocar VIN check alongside those official tools, since it consolidates accident and airbag-deployment records, salvage-auction history, odometer/rollback checks, and prior sales listings in one report.
Beyond the airbag recall: other used-Odyssey checks
Whatever the recall status, screen any used Odyssey for the usual value-and-safety risks: prior accidents and their severity, salvage or junk auction history, odometer rollback, theft records (NICB), number of prior owners, and past sales listings (prices, mileage, days on market). Cross-check the VIN's specs and options against the listing, and review its NHTSA and IIHS safety ratings. If the airbags deployed in a documented incident, an insurer or a diligent seller may have disclosed it — but absence of disclosure is not proof it never happened, which is exactly why the history record matters.
Check before you buy: A Zilocar VIN check screens a used Odyssey for open recall presence and surfaces its accident and airbag-deployment status, salvage/junk-auction records, odometer/rollback check, theft (NICB), ownership and sales-listing history, specs, NHTSA/IIHS ratings, and market valuation. It does not confirm a recall was remedied, track NHTSA investigations, or show firmware status — use NHTSA and a Honda dealer for those.
