What exactly is wrong with the headlights — too dim or too bright?
The headlights are too bright, not too dim. The low-beam (lower beam) output of the integral-beam headlamps exceeds the maximum photometric intensity permitted by paragraph S10.14.6 of FMVSS No. 108. Supplier Marelli Automotive Lighting tested 25 right-hand and 25 left-hand lamps; the trade outlet Teslarati reported measured maxima of 136.2-230.1 cd (right-hand) and 117.5-160.3 cd (left-hand). NHTSA concluded that in rain, snow, and fog the excess output could produce veiling glare affecting both the Tesla driver and oncoming road users. This is a glare/over-bright noncompliance, not a failed or dim headlamp.
How did a two-year-old issue become a recall in July 2026?
